The Herborn (Dillkreis) station is the main station of the city Herborn in the Dill Railway (section of the former Deutz-Gießen Railway ) in Central Hesse . Around 2,000 passengers - mostly commuters and schoolchildren - get on, off or transfer here every day.

history

The station was built as a station on the Deutz-Gießener Railway. With the start of operation of the entire route on January 12, 1862, public transport began here. When the Aar-Salzböde Railway to Niederwalgern was opened in 1902 , the station became a connecting station. In 1906 the line to Driedorf , which was later extended, was added. This led to an expansion of the station.

In 1980, the last passenger traffic on the route to Montabaur, which was only carried out as far as Schönbach, was discontinued, and in 1985 freight traffic as well. Freight traffic on the route to Niederwalgern remained until 1995, passenger traffic until 2001.

Reception building

The station building was built in the style of Neo-Renaissance built and is stylistically neighboring building of the Post tuned with it along the station square dominated. The planning comes from the Herborn architect Ludwig Hofmann . The building was erected in 1908 - after the city fire of 1904 - and replaced the original building from 1862. The station building from 1908 is one of the “second generation” of structural engineering along the route. It had become necessary because the old station building was no longer sufficient after the two branch lines were connected.

The reception building is designed on an asymmetrical floor plan . A rugged, slate-covered roof landscape dominates. On the street side, the facade is dominated by an eccentrically mounted, large arched window with a renaissance gable towering over it . The street-side entrance to the reception hall is located here. The reception building is now a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .

The reception building belongs to the city of Herborn. At the end of August 2015, renovation work began to make it more accessible and friendlier by the Hessentag (May 20 to 29, 2016) . In the first and second construction phases, the roof and the facade (except on the track side) were renovated, the reception hall redesigned and equipped with an elevator system, a ramp system was built at the street-side entrance to the reception hall and the access stairs were renewed. The former ticket office and the former baggage reception area south of the reception hall have been converted. There, the retired City Marketing GmbH Herborn one in January 2017th There is also a public toilet facility there , which can be reached from the house platform . The facade was equipped with LED lighting, which underlines the special features of the building. The underpass to tracks 2 and 3 as well as the exit in the Littau was made barrier-free and received lift systems, a tactile guidance system, new signs, a new coat of paint and new lighting. The exit to Littau was given a large set of stairs and ramps and a bike park system with 25 boxes, 17 of which are equipped with a charging facility for e-bikes. The exit to the city center is now equipped with an elevator system. The construction costs for the first construction phase amounted to around 1.9 million euros. It was completed in time for the start of the Hessentag. On May 19, 2016, the reception hall was officially released for use again.

The second phase of construction began in June 2016. It included u. a. the renovation of the kiosk (completed in December 2016) and the restaurant in the northern part of the building.

In further construction phases (until 2018), the track-side facade, the track-side roof and the entire top floor ceiling are to be energetically renovated. Businesses are to be located on the first floor (including a fitness studio) and a studio and living space on the second floor. It should also be possible in future to get from the house platform to the city marketing space. In November 2017, a 160 m² yoga studio moved into the first floor. The construction costs for the entire renovation and conversion amount to around 3.8 million euros, of which the State of Hesse is contributing around 750,000 euros as support. In January 2017 it became known that the planned costs had been exceeded by 340,000 euros.

Station forecourt and bus station

In 2012 the station forecourt was redesigned, the cobblestones replaced and the stairs in front of the building renewed. In addition, the quarry stone parapets were replaced with new metal railings. The prominent, large linden trees next to the stairs were replaced by spherical maple to allow a view of the reception building again.

Next to the station forecourt, the new central bus station (ZOB) was inaugurated on December 11, 2012 . It has ten bus platforms and - like the station forecourt - is equipped with a guidance system for the blind and visually impaired. With this system, a requirement of the state of Hesse was implemented, which assumed 75 percent of the construction costs. All city and regional bus routes now stop here. This makes it easy and convenient to switch between bus and train. There are also two large electronic display boards that show the departure times of buses and trains and any delays.

Mittelhessen-Express class 442 as RB 40 on the way from Gießen to Dillenburg (March 2018)

The station today has a house platform and an island platform . Another island platform to the east, which previously served the traffic of the branch lines from Herborn to Montabaur and Niederwalgern (last operated as RB 44), was demolished in October 2015. A staircase and ramp has now been created for the underpass as an eastern access to the platforms. For 2018, the new construction and the increase of the house and central platform from 38 cm to 55 cm and the construction of an elevator system on the central platform are planned. The work is expected to last from January 2018 to August 2020. The required approval procedure is to be initiated in 2016. In the former freight yard (opposite the station building in Littau), the tracks were removed at the end of February 2014. The soil was then detoxified and a P + R area with an initial 150 parking spaces for commuters and city visitors set up on an area of around 3,300 square meters . There are plans to build a parking deck there in the future for additional parking spaces. The parking lot will soon be better lit. Video surveillance of the entire train station including the neighboring central bus station (ZOB) is currently being discussed.

Today, Regional Express trains on the Siegen - Gießen - Frankfurt Hbf route ( Main-Sieg-Express ; RE 99) and the Mittelhessen Express on the Dillenburg- Giessen-Frankfurt Hbf route (RB 40) stop here . Local traffic is operated by the HLB and DB Regio Mitte at the request of RMV .

In the past, the station was served by two other routes:

The station is no longer staffed today. Tickets can be bought on the Internet, at the kiosk and from a machine on the house platform.

The Herborn signal box will be replaced by an Estw in the medium term.
