The station Niederwalgern is a train station in central Hesse , south of Marburg . It was built as a wedge station . It is the only train station in town and the largest in the community of Weimar (Lahn) . It is  assigned to station category 5 and is served by regional railways , and also by individual regional express trains during rush hour. The station building is a listed building .

history

The station was opened in 1850 at the same time as the Main-Weser Railway . The town of Niederwalgern experienced a great boom due to the railway connection. In the northern station area, some businesses settled, some of which also loaded their goods by rail. Since the opening of the Aar-Salzböde-Bahn in May 1894, the importance of the station has increased, especially for passenger traffic . When the Main-Weser Railway was electrified in the 1960s, this also affected the station section of the line to Herborn .

The decline of the station began in the 1980s when the overhead line over the western part of the station was removed and individual tracks were dismantled. In addition, the loading of goods was completely abandoned. In 1992 the last freight train from Gladenbach pulled into the station and the Aar-Salzböde Railway was expected to be closed. When passenger traffic on the eastern part of this route ended in May 1995 despite a positive report, the importance of the station declined sharply. Some train connections have been canceled and the station staff has been withdrawn. A possible reactivation of the Aar-Salzböde-Bahn became increasingly unlikely with the cessation of all traffic on the western section (2001), the complete closure (2002) and finally the illegal track dismantling west of Niederwalgern (2006). Today the line to Herborn - with the exception of the station area in Niederwalgern - has been dismantled, the freight yard closed and the number of accessible tracks has been reduced to four. In addition, some freight tracks in the northern station area and connecting tracks to the Aar-Salzböde-Bahn have been dismantled in recent years.

The area around the station is largely barrier-free . The only problem for people with reduced mobility is crossing from platform 1 to the intermediate platform (platform 2) and boarding the trains that run here.

location

Niederwalgern train station is on the northeastern edge of the town on the road to Wenkbach . There is parking and a bus stop on the western side of the station . It is the largest public transport hub in the municipality.

Transport links

In addition to P + R parking spaces, there is the Niederwalgern Bahnhof bus stop . The following bus lines stop there:

  • MR-31 (Niederweimar – Niederwalgern)
  • MR-32 (Kehna – Fronhausen)
  • MR-36 (Oberwalgern – Niederwalgern) once a day
  • MR-37 (Niederwalgern School-Rodenhausen / Reimershausen / Lohra)
  • MR-38 (Weipholtshausen – Wenkbach)

Reception building

The reception building is a brick building from the 19th century. It was divided into a train station restaurant, which was housed in an annex and no longer exists today, and whose former guest room has served as a waiting hall with a kiosk since the 1970s , a ticket office (with baggage handling) and - until 1984 - the signal box Nf , which was located in an annex on the Main-Weser-Bahn side, which was demolished today . It operated all points and signals of the southern section of the Main-Weser-Bahn station as well as the entry signal of the Aar-Salzböde-Bahn . The two points and the track barrier on the branch line were in place at this time, they were only locked by the signal box Nf ; There were no exit signals here until 1984. In the 1990s , the railway staff was withdrawn from the station and it has been empty since then. The reception building is a listed building , but is still not being maintained.

Tracks

Niederwalgern station today has five tracks , two of which have a platform . There are also two disused tracks on the Aar-Salzböde-Bahn with a platform; the third track on this side of the station has been covered by a parking lot for some time. There are some freight tracks north of the passenger station , but they are all closed today.

  • Track 1 is like tracks 2 and 3 on the Main-Weser-Bahn and on the main platform of the station. The trains to Giessen and Frankfurt stop there.
  • Track 2 is on the intermediate platform and is mostly used by the trains to Marburg and Treysa.
  • Track 3 is a passing track and is only used by passing freight trains and InterCitys . It also has a raised intermediate platform.
  • Track 4 is the former main track of the Aar-Salzböde-Bahn , of which the northern part, parallel to tracks 1-3, is also used as a passing track. It has no platform.
  • The tracks of the Aar-Salzböde-Bahn were used by passenger and freight trains. Most of the trains left the platform on the side of the reception building (platform 4). Track 5 served as an entry and exit track for freight trains, but also had a raised intermediate platform, and track 6 was used as a siding for trains that ended here. The tracks of the former Aar-Salzböde-Bahn have been completely dismantled in the area of the passenger station.

Signal box

Today's signal box Nf is located south of the reception building and was built in 1984 in the SpDr S60 design. It replaces the previously existing mechanical interlocking Nf ( Zimmermann & Buchloh , 1919) in an extension to the station building on the side of the main line, as well as the individual interlocking Nn at the northern end of the loading street at about 114.9 kilometers (same design) like Nf ). In the new signal box Nf , all of the station's systems are controlled (both those on the Main-Weser-Bahn side and those on the former Aar-Salzböde-Bahn side , including the restricted level crossing over this route that leads to the station area ; there was a separate control panel for this barrier system that was not integrated into the table). In addition, the neighboring Fronhausen (Lahn) train station was integrated into the signal box as a remote control area from the start.

Service offer

Niederwalgern station has been served every hour by the Mittelhessen-Express ( Treysa - Frankfurt Hbf ) since 2006 . Before that, regional trains ran with a wide variety of routes. Since December 2010 there has been a new type of train that runs every two hours from Marburg to Frankfurt . The old regional trains 30 (Marburg – Gießen – Friedberg) and 40 (Gießen – Dillenburg – Siegen) were taken over by the HLB . With this takeover, the connection to the train station has developed very positively. In the rush hour , individual regional express trains (Kassel-Frankfurt or Marburg-Frankfurt) and shuttle trains between Treysa or Marburg and Gießen also stopped here. In 2019 there are only three trains on the edge of the day. (As of 2019)

The trains on the Aar-Salzböde Railway did not run at a fixed rate. They drove from Herborn to Niederwalgern. In the last few years of operation, all trains were tied through without stopping in Niederweimar to Marburg; on the other side of the route, individual trains continued via Herborn to Dillenburg.

Niederweimar RegionalRB 41

Fronhausen (Lahn)

During rush hour, individual RE trains stopped in Niederwalgern. This has been preserved from the time when you could change trains to Herborn. However, it was requested that these trains stop at the similarly busy Fronhausen station instead of Niederwalgern. This had been enforced with two types of trains. The station is in the tariff area of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV).
