Siegen Hauptbahnhof is the most important and largest passenger station of the five passenger stations and stops in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Siegen . It is located in the lower town of Siegen in the immediate vicinity of the bus station and the Sieg Carré and City-Galerie shopping centers .

history

former memorial plaque on platform 3 (meanwhile renewed)

The station was opened on January 10, 1861 at the same time as the branch line from Siegen to Betzdorf , which is now part of the victory line.

The section from Altena to Siegen of the Ruhr-Sieg route was opened in the same year on August 6, 1861.

During the Nazi era , from 1942 to 1944, people mainly of Jewish faith were deported from Siegen train station to forced labor camps. On the initiative of the Active Museum Südwestfalen, a memorial plaque on platform 4 reminds of this.

present

Temporary platform with tracks 5 and 7 during the platform renovation.

Today the station has six platform tracks. Of these, tracks 1 ( stump track ) and 2 are on the house platform , the other four tracks are on the central platform , two offset on each side of the platform. The platform height has been 76 centimeters since 2018, the maximum platform lengths vary between 150 and 353 meters.

Since the beginning of June 2015, the station's traffic station has been extensively modernized for 11.4 million euros. The conversion measures ("Modernization Offensive MOF 2") are expected to be completed by the end of 2019 [out of date] . So far, in addition to the renewed platforms, the station has received a new pedestrian overpass and elevators (in operation since the end of February 2019), which enable barrier-free access both to the platforms themselves and to Freudenberger Straße. In addition, some of the platforms received new roofing as well as modern lighting and loudspeaker systems. However, the platforms are only temporarily in operation again because the modernization of the station on tracks 2 and 3 in the area of the underpass has not yet been completed.

The station building from 1861 will also be modernized after the MOF [obsolete] is over. The demolition and reconstruction of the building, planned several times by an investor, will not be pursued further after it has been rejected in public. Deutsche Bahn AG is now planning to convert the station building while retaining the old structure. Interest groups from the population also demand entry in the list of monuments.

The second lot in the award procedure for services in the Eifel-Westerwald-Sieg diesel network went to the Hessische Landesbahn (HLB), which has taken over the regional rail services of the Dreiländerbahn (DLB) in full since December 2014. The RB 90 from Limburg has been connected to Siegen Hbf and partly to Kreuztal since December 2015. The RB 93 now runs from Siegen Hbf in the direction of Betzdorf. The RB 95 only runs between Siegen Hbf and Dillenburg. This concept enables cycle densities between Siegen and Betzdorf as well as Siegen and Kreuztal. Furthermore, unnecessary transfers are avoided.

Long-distance transport

In the 1980s and 1990s there was a long-distance train connection from Siegen to Oberstdorf .

From Monday to Friday there was also the fast connection with D 810/811, which connected Dortmund and Frankfurt in less than three hours. This train, particularly suitable for business travelers, only stopped in Siegen-Weidenau and Wetzlar en route . Other express trains from the direction of Münsterland and the eastern Ruhr area (Dortmund, Hagen) touched Siegen on their way to Giessen and Frankfurt am Main . Long-distance trains on the Cologne - Gießen - Kassel route also stopped in Siegen several times a day until the end of the 1990s.

Between 1993 and 2002 the train stations in Siegen and Siegen-Weidenau were system stops for long-distance traffic on the Interregio line 22 of Deutsche Bahn. This ran every 2 hours as the successor to the classic express train connections from Münster via Hamm , Hagen, Siegen, Gießen to Frankfurt am Main with individual extensions to Emden and Norddeich Mole . Despite the importance of these trains, which were never advertised as an inexpensive and comfortable alternative to the Rhine rail, as well as the development function within the Sauerland and Siegerland, Deutsche Bahn ceased operations due to inefficiency and the city of Siegen thus temporarily lost its entire long-distance transport connection.

From June 2003 to the end of September 2003 the InterConnex 3 (Neuss – Rostock) held in Siegen . This offer was discontinued relatively quickly due to weak demand.

Between December 13, 2009 and December 10, 2011 a pair of EuroCity trains on line 62 ran daily from Siegen via Gießen , Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart , Munich and Salzburg to Klagenfurt am Wörthersee . There was a direct connection with Zagreb through a through car .

A resumption of Siegen in the long-distance, then intercity network is planned from 2021 . The future IC line 34 is to travel to Siegen main station with double-decker cars from December 2021. With the exception of two pairs of trains, according to the current state of planning, the long-distance trains will also stop at Weidenau station. A total of 8 pairs of trains are to run on the route Münster - Hamm - Unna - Siegen - Frankfurt or Dortmund - Witten - Siegen - Frankfurt, of which the two pairs mentioned, which do not stop in Weidenau, are accelerated between Siegen and Hamm and one in Hamm enable an attractive change to the ICE line 10 in the direction of Hanover and Berlin. One of the faster train pairs is supposed to go beyond Münster to Norddeich . The remaining 6 pairs of trains travel more slowly and continue from Letmathe via Witten to Dortmund Hbf. Later, it is also planned to extend this line 34 instead of line 26 via Frankfurt to Darmstadt , Heidelberg and Karlsruhe , which will, however, be closely linked to the construction progress in Stuttgart 21 related. A date for the extension can therefore not be given by DB Fernverkehr .

Change to bus transport

Immediately in front of the main train station is the ZOB (central bus station) for downtown Siegen. From here the city buses, as well as the regional and express buses to the surrounding area ( local transport in Siegen ). The long-distance buses continue to run from a provisional stop on Koblenzer Straße, around 500 m from the central bus station. It is planned to relocate the long-distance bus stop behind the main train station to the current bus stand. There the long-distance buses would also be easily accessible for rail customers.

Naming

New signs for Siegen Hbf

The Siegen Hauptbahnhof was not designated as a Hauptbahnhof by Deutsche Bahn until 2017 . Nevertheless, the name Siegen Hbf was on some of the station signs in the train station and on the road signs in the city center. Automatic passenger announcements on the Rhein-Sieg-Express also announced “Siegen Hauptbahnhof” as the next stop.

With the completion of the modernization work in 2017, the official name change in Siegen Hbf was completed for the timetable change in December .

On the part of DB Netz AG , the Siegen train station had been referred to as "Siegen Hauptbahnhof" since July 1, 2012.

Other facilities

There is a DB travel center and a newsagent in the station . Until the end of 2013, there was also a McDonald’s fast food restaurant in the building . After a long period of vacancy, Kentucky Fried Chicken opened a branch there in November 2018 . A REWE To Go branch opened on July 25, 2019 in the premises used by the station restaurant until the beginning of 2015 .
