The City-Galerie is a shopping center in Siegen , North Rhine-Westphalia . It opened on October 14, 1998, and was created as a result of considering moving the city center to a more consumer-friendly location. It changed the cityscape, the urban structure and the urban culture fundamentally.
Center in the upper town
Until this new center was built, the "Upper Town" on the Siegberg, which had grown around the historic town center, had formed the center of commercial life in the city of Siegen. The relocation led to a desertification of the historical center that continues to this day. The historical center has had to give up its function as such and now has more of the character of a secondary center .
Location and connection
The shopping center is located in the lower town of Siegen in the immediate vicinity of the Siegen main train station , the central bus station and the 2006 newly built "Sieg Carrés". The external appearance of the “Sieg Carré” follows the appearance of the “City-Galerie”. Together, both buildings, which are atypical for the cityscape, form a massive complex.
