  • The federal highway 54 (abbreviation: B 54 ) is a federal highway running in north-south direction between Gronau on the Dutch border and Wiesbaden .

    course

The federal road 54 begins at the Dutch border near Gronau, where the Dutch Rijksweg 35 or its extension N 35 merges into the federal road. It leads through the places Ochtrup , Steinfurt (district Burgsteinfurt and Borghorst), Nordwalde , Altenberge , Münster , Rinkerode , Herbern , Werne , Lünen , Dortmund (there it includes the entire Wallring, among others), Herdecke , Hagen , Schalksmühle , Lüdenscheid , Kierspe , Meinerzhagen , Olpe , Kreuztal , Siegen , Wilnsdorf , Burbach , Rennerod , Dornburg , Limburg an der Lahn , Diez , Bad Schwalbach and Taunusstein to Wiesbaden , where it ends in Berliner Straße at Bundesstraße 455 . The former easternmost part of the federal highway from Wiesbaden via Wiesbaden-Erbenheim was included in the federal highway 455, the further continuation (Rhein-Main-Schnellweg) over the today's Wiesbadener Kreuz up to the meeting with the federal highway 40 near Weilbach in 1965 in today's federal highway 66 .

New line between Gronau and Münster

There is a new line right at the start of the B 54 on the border with the Netherlands. It serves as a bypass of Gronau and then connects to the A 31 . This 10.2 kilometer long and 46 million euro section of the new line from the border to the A 31 was opened to traffic on March 29, 2004 after eight years of construction.

The next section continues to bypass Ochtrup. The new line initially ended at the connection to federal highway 70 north of Metelen. On December 11, 2006, construction work began to close the 5.2 kilometer long gap in the upgraded line between Ochtrup and Steinfurt-Burgsteinfurt, the plans for which go back to the 1930s. It was opened to traffic on May 5, 2010; the construction costs amounted to 21 million euros. The section of the old B 54 there was downgraded to a state road as part of the L 510 on January 1, 2010, like the other two replaced sections . This route is followed by a section built between 1975 and 1981, which serves as a bypass road from Burgsteinfurt, Borghorst (here through the Buchenberg forest area, today the Am Bagno - Buchenberg nature reserve ), Altenberge and Nienberge . This means that the B 54 between Gronau and Münster is completely free of intersections and equipped with a third lane that is alternately available for the directions of travel ( 2 + 1 system ). After connecting to the A1 , the B 54 continues on its old route shortly before Münster into the city center of Münster.

The new line between the Dutch border and Münster was originally to be built as the A 314 . Therefore, the connection points A 1 and A 31 are also developed as complete cloverleaves . The plans for the construction of an A 314 have since been discarded.

    Route from Siegen to Wiesbaden

In Siegen, the B 54 has been developed as an extension of the A 4 to a city motorway on Hochstelzen, the Hüttentalstraße .

She leaves the Siegerland at the Haiger / Burbach junction of the A 45 and climbs south into the Hohe Westerwald , passing Siegerland Airport directly to the west. Shortly afterwards it reaches its highest point at the Salzburger Kopf at about 630 meters. Descending from the Westerwald, it crosses the federal highways 414 and 255 and joins the four-lane B 49 before the Lahn valley , the common dead-straight route to Limburg is popularly known as the Lange Meil .

The southernmost section, from Limburg to Wiesbaden, runs through the largely narrow and winding Aartal in the western Hintertaunus and is therefore also called the Aarstrasse . Apart from a few sections, this is also the official street name up to Dürerplatz in Wiesbaden. In the Aartal, the line of the disused Aartalbahn , the Aartal-Radweg and the Aar-Höhenweg run parallel .

In Bleidenstadt , the B 54 leaves the Aartal and heads south over the Eiserne Hand , where it crosses the Taunus main ridge at a height of 421 meters . From there it leads downhill for kilometers to Wiesbaden, where it forms the partially six-lane Ringstrasse , which runs around the inner city to the west and south of the Ringkirche , Landeshaus and Hauptbahnhof . As Berliner Straße, it leaves Wiesbaden in the direction of Wiesbaden-Erbenheim and Bundesautobahn 66 in the direction of Wiesbaden-Erbenheim , but first joins Bundesstraße 455 on the outskirts of the city .

A south bypass is to be built from Limburg, Diez and Holzheim , for which purpose the old route in the Limburg settlement area of Blumenrod is to be expanded.

    Consequences of the hurricane Kyrill

The hurricane Kyrill , on 18 and 19 January 2007 on Europe moved away, leaving behind 54 great damage also to the B. Between Schalksmühle and Bruges near the town of Nöllenhammer , the forest was so badly damaged that it came to a landslide , which also affected the road. Three vehicles were buried and the occupants were able to get to safety in good time. The clean-up work continued until March 1, 2007, as special machines had to be requested from Switzerland due to the steep slope .
