Aggertalbahn to Overath / Cologne

Swell:

The Hagen – Dieringhausen railway line (also known as the Volmetalbahn ) is a largely single-track line (formerly continuous to Bruges and double-track between Gummersbach and Dieringhausen) and non-electrified railway line from Hagen via Lüdenscheid-Bruges , Meinerzhagen and Gummersbach to Gummersbach-Dieringhausen . There the Aggertalbahn joins in the direction of Cologne .

On the northern section, the regional train line Volmetal-Bahn (RB 52), which, to be precise, runs over four different railway lines, runs from Lüdenscheid via Hagen Hauptbahnhof to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof . The namesake of the connections is the Volme , the course of which it follows south of Hagen to the source town of Meinerzhagen .

In the south-western section, the Oberbergische Bahn (RB 25) runs from Lüdenscheid via Lüdenscheid-Bruges, Meinerzhagen and Gummersbach-Dieringhausen to Cologne Hansaring .

history

Bruges signal box
disused Oberbrügge station, an alternative junction until 2012

The route was examined as an alternative route to the Ruhr-Sieg Railway in the 1840s . In May 1870, the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft started building the Volmetalbahn. On October 16, 1871 the section from Hagen to Oberhagen and on March 15, 1874 the further line to Dahl was opened for freight traffic . On September 6, 1874, this was also opened for passenger traffic. After the nationalization, the Volmetalbahn was extended from Bruges via Meinerzhagen to Marienheide and Gummersbach in 1891/1892 . In 1893 the entire line to Dieringhausen was completed. The continuation of Krummenerl to connect to the Biggetalbahn and further to Kreuztal was tackled several times, but not completed. The further construction ended in Krummenerl in 1927 .

In Hagen, a route through the middle of the city (along today's Bergstrasse) was initially chosen. Due to a considerable obstacle to road traffic, construction of an alternative through the Goldberg Tunnel began in November 1906 and was put into operation on July 1, 1910. When the line was upgraded to a double-track main line around 1906, the Kotthausen and Hammerhausen tunnels were subsequently removed.

At the beginning of the 20th century there were plans to connect the Volmetalbahn with the Plettenberg – Herscheid railway line and thus create a link between the Volme and Lennetal valleys. However, this failed due to the high construction costs. In the Mintenbeck valley near Oberbrügge there is a built-in railway embankment that was never used by a train as an investment ruin .

Until the 1950s there was a handover to the narrow-gauge Leppetalbahn in Marienheide .

On the route between Hagen and Bruges there are three abandoned train stations or stops. Between Oberhagen and Dahl there were still stations in Hagen-Delstern and -Ambrock, between Dahl and Rummenohl there used to be a stop in the priory. All of these were closed on May 27, 1979.

In May 1986 the passenger traffic between Bruges and Marienheide was stopped, a year later also between Marienheide and Gummersbach.

From 1965 to September 1994 went on the train Volmetal pull trains consisting of Hagen diesel locomotives of the 212 series with two to three cars, mostly, these were to n-car . Until 1979, there was also a rail bus shuttle service between Lüdenscheid and Bruges, which provided a connection to the express trains between Cologne and Hagen. The era of the class 628.4 diesel multiple units , which operated from September 1994 to May 30, 1999, was comparatively short . On the section (Cologne–) Dieringhausen – Meinerzhagen (1986 shortened to Marienheide, from 1987 only to Gummersbach) the city railway was used from 1984 to 1995 .

In 1996, the operation of local transport on the Volmetalbahn was awarded to the Dortmund-Märkische Eisenbahn (DME) in a Europe-wide tender . She took over on May 30, 1999, operating on the connection Hagen-Bruges Lüdenscheid and sat DMUs of type Bombardier Talent one. In 2004, Deutsche Bahn won the next tender and has been using Alstom Coradia LINT railcars (class 648) ever since .

During the first tender, the line between Bruges and Hagen-Delstern was dismantled on a single track in order to speed it up. This acceleration is only minimal in operation, however, various side tracks have been dismantled and the timetable corridor has been narrowed. The ballast block trains that still run regularly from Meinerzhagen in the direction of Hagen and the empty trains in the opposite direction have to wait regularly in Bruges or Delstern. Even if the passenger trains are delayed, the scheduled meeting in Rummenohl is not always possible and creates further delays that cancel out the desired acceleration.

A plan presented in 1997 for the Hagen regional light rail system, to operate the Volmetal line from Dortmund via Hagen to Lüdenscheid as a light rail system directly from Dortmund city center via Hagen city center to downtown Lüdenscheid, was rejected for cost reasons despite the transport benefit.

The 2200 meter long Goldberg tunnel in Hagen is an important railway structure on the Volmetalbahn .

Another striking structure is the signal box in Bruges train station .

One of the two signal boxes at the Gummersbach train station has served the local savings bank as a training center since 2006. Most of the other signal boxes, on the other hand, have now been demolished or are empty.

business

The Volmetalbahn is used in local passenger transport by the regional train lines RB 25 (Cologne Hansaring - Lüdenscheid) and RB 52 (Dortmund Hbf - Lüdenscheid).

On the lower Volmetalbahn (Hagen to Bruges) the regional train line Volmetal-Bahn (RB 52) runs every hour (with gaps on Sunday morning ). It begins in Dortmund Central Station and leads via Hagen Central Station and Bruges (Westf) station (with a change of direction) to Lüdenscheid station. The train crossing takes place shortly before half an hour in Rummenohl.

Local rail passenger transport on the lower Volmetalbahn has been operated by DB Regio NRW since December 12, 2004 ; diesel multiple units of the 632 series from the Polish manufacturer Pesa for speeds of up to 140 km / h have been used for the Volmetal-Bahn since August 2018 , with the Volmetalbahn being a maximum 90 km / h.

On the upper Volmetalbahn (Dieringhausen to Bruges) the regional train line 25 " Oberbergische Bahn " runs with diesel multiple units of the 620 series (partly in double traction), which are connected in Dieringhausen from the Aggertalbahn from Cologne to the Volmetalbahn. A train runs every hour between Cologne and Lüdenscheid. This is supplemented by a 30-minute cycle between Cologne and Gummersbach, during rush hour from Monday to Friday. Due to the lack of a diversion between Meinerzhagen and Bruges in Kierspe, the regional train initially (2017-2019) only ran between Cologne and Lüdenscheid every two hours. With the timetable change in December 2019, the Kierspe train station was restored, enabling the hourly service between Cologne and Lüdenscheid. DB Regio NRW operates as a railway company under the brand name “VAREO” ( V oreifel, A hrtal, R hein, E ifel, O berbergisches Land / upper Volme ). Since 2003 the trains have been running to Marienheide again, on February 27, 2014 the line to Meinerzhagen was reactivated, and on December 10, 2017 to Bruges.

Closing the gap with the Aggertalbahn and extensions

Former planning

The Citybahn drove in the 1980s from Cologne to Meinerzhagen (here in Marienheide, left the already then abandoned Wipper Valley Railway to Remscheid-Lennep).

There were numerous efforts to resume passenger traffic on the closed section. The planned gap closure should create a connection of four parts:

Closing the gap between Gummersbach and Bruges

At the end of the 1990s, the municipalities and public transport authorities involved commissioned an expert report on the transport benefits and the economic viability of closing the gap between Gummersbach and Bruges. The report came to the conclusion that the reopening would make economic sense and that the section would be used by around 4500 passengers per day. It was determined that 2200 passengers were new customers who did not use the local transport services at the time. The train should run 20 minutes faster and in the Meinerzhagen – Gummersbach section more frequently than the bus service. As a result, in the summer of 1998 the state of North Rhine-Westphalia classified the gap between Bruges (Westf) and Gummersbach as urgent in its public transport requirements planning and planned the necessary funds for reactivation in the budget. There were contracts with municipalities closed and SPNV PTAs.

In the section between Gummersbach and Marienheide, traffic was finally resumed at the end of April 2003. The Gummersbach Nord stop and Kotthausen train station were not reactivated. Three million euros were invested in reactivating the eight-kilometer section. The remaining section between Bruges (Westf) and Marienheide was then to be reactivated for passenger traffic. In May 2006, the then State Transport Minister Oliver Wittke stopped all regional rail transport projects in North Rhine-Westphalia , including the final completion of the Marienheide – Bruges section. At that time, new tracks had already been laid, new signals installed and new level crossings built between Marienheide and Meinerzhagen .

The association assembly of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) on September 26, 2006 in Cologne decided to close the gap on the Marienheide – Bruges railway line. The special purpose associations had already given order guarantees. Most recently, on January 16, 2007, the district administrator of the Oberbergisches Kreis Hagen Jobi , the district administrator of the Märkisches Kreis Aloys Steppuhn and the mayors of the cities between Gummersbach and Hagen, as well as the district building directors of the Märkisches and Oberbergischer districts signed a joint declaration in which they announced the completion of reactivation.

Another attempt from 2007

On November 7, 2007, the then North Rhine-Westphalia Transport Minister Oliver Wittke lifted the planning stop for the Marienheide – Meinerzhagen section. Wittke followed a recommendation by the Rhein-Sieg and Ruhr-Lippe associations .

At a meeting of the steering committee to reactivate the Marienheide – Meinerzhagen railway line in Gummersbach in November 2008, various plans were presented. This included an extension of the 30-minute cycle from Cologne - Overath to Engelskirchen and later even to Gummersbach. At the same time, the connection to Meinerzhagen was to be reopened and some improvements were made to the entire route. This includes the recommissioning of the valley-side track between Gummersbach and Dieringhausen. The section to Bruges should then be reactivated. The purpose association SPNV Ruhr lip but possessed at that time did not have the necessary means to be able to compensate for the annual operating deficit.

In November 2009 the company was put out to tender from December 15, 2013 for a period of 20 years until 2033. Meinerzhagen was specified as the destination for the RB 25 . DB Regio Rheinland was awarded the contract for the tender .

In February 2011, Deutsche Bahn put the route between Bruges and Meinerzhagen up for sale. This seemed to bring the line to a close. This strengthened the resistance in the affected communities.

In June 2011, the responsible association announced that the section between Meinerzhagen and Bruges would be repaired in two stages with considerable effort. The first expansion phase should last from autumn 2011 to the end of 2012 and comprise a construction volume of 8 million euros. The second expansion stage has roughly the same volume and should be completed by 2014 at the latest. In this way, both freight and passenger traffic would be secured for the future of the Volmetalbahn. The cities of Meinerzhagen, Kierspe and Halver welcomed the plans. In addition, the SPD member of the state parliament, Gordan Dudas , said that the Meinerzhagen – Bruges connection as part of the Cologne – Hagen expansion stage was important for connecting the region to rail traffic and that the railway would strengthen the economic and educational location of South Westphalia.

In Bruges, the outer platform has been replaced by a central platform with a head track for turning the RB 52 line and a through track for the RB 25 on the opposite side, and in Kierspe an intersection is again planned. To increase the line speed to 80 km / h, some level crossings have to be closed and others have traffic lights.

On February 27, 2014 Meinerzhagen was again connected to rail passenger transport. The trains of the regional train line RB 25 Cologne-Hansaring-Gummersbach-Marienheide now run in regular intervals to Meinerzhagen. There the last scheduled passenger train left Meinerzhagen station on May 31, 1986 in the direction of Gummersbach – Dieringhausen. The Holzwipper stop was not reactivated. The course for reactivation was also set in 2012 for the complete closure of the gap through the Volmetal to Lüdenscheid – Bruges, but implementation had to be postponed several times due to planning delays in the renovation of the 19 level crossings and took place on December 10, 2017. On the Meinerzhagen section - The RB 25 ran from Cologne to Lüdenscheid in Bruges every two hours until December 2019. However, the Kierspe station and the Halver-Oberbrügge stop were not yet completed and could not be served. Only on December 15, 2019, were both traffic stations reconnected to the railway network. On this day, the upper Volmetalbahn (Gummersbach - Lüdenscheid-Bruges) is fully reactivated for passenger traffic

Extensive work has been going on in the area of the station area in Meinerzhagen since the beginning of October 2012. With a view to the reactivation of passenger traffic on the section between Marienheide and Meinerzhagen originally planned for December 2013, the track systems were completely renewed. Up to the end of November 2012 there was also further expansion work on the further course of the Volme route after Kierspe in the direction of Oberbrugge. Deutsche Bahn AG invested around 16.5 million euros in the track renewal.

The reactivation of the Volmetalbahn is an essential project within the regional program “Above the Volme”. In addition to the route work, carried out by Deutsche Bahn AG, the four participating municipalities of Meinerzhagen, Kierspe, Halver and Schalksmühle are also making the area around the stations more attractive. In addition, these parking spaces for the Volmetal cycle path, which is also part of the regional project, will be retained. It is to run over a length of five kilometers between Bruges and Schalksmühle as a railway cycle path on the site of the former second track of the Volmetalbahn. As things stand, Deutsche Bahn AG is involved in the overall planning with an investment volume of around 29 million euros.

In this context, the central bus stations in Meinerzhagen and Kierspe were also redesigned. They should serve to link rail and bus traffic.

Further offer development

Since December 10, 2017, after 30 years, scheduled passenger traffic between Bruges and Cologne has been back.

As part of the new tender for the Sauerland network, DB Regio was again awarded the contract. With the timetable change in December 2016, the contract runs for twelve years. Pesa Link vehicles are in use on the RB 52 line . Since the vehicles were not ready to start operations on time, DB Regio had to continue using existing vehicles until they were delivered. To compensate for 14 discontinued multiple units of the 648.1, which were contractually bound from December 2016 in Brandenburg and had to be modernized beforehand, the Dortmund location received six older vehicles of the 648.0 series from Schleswig-Holstein. From August 2018, the new generation of vehicles will be deployed almost two years later.

Despite the reactivation of passenger traffic on the Meinerzhagen - Bruges section, the intermediate stations Halver-Oberbrügge and Kierspe have not yet been served due to a lack of planning approval decisions. At the end of June 2019, the section between Bruges and Meinerzhagen was closed in order to create a crossing track in Kierspe and convert 19 level crossings so that a higher line speed is possible. With the timetable change in December 2019, operations were resumed and the hourly service of the RB 25 to Lüdenscheid was introduced, as well as a stop in Kierspe and an on-demand stop in Halver-Oberbrügge.

Future planning

According to the “Zielnetz 2030+” of the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Rheinland (NVR), there are plans to include the RB 25 between Gummersbach and Cologne as S 15 in the network of the Cologne S-Bahn , with a connection via Euskirchen to Kall in the Eifel . For this purpose, the RB 25 is to be connected to the RB 24 on the Eifel route. In addition, a new line RE 22 was to be introduced between Lüdenscheid and Trier. The route between Gummersbach and Cologne is to be electrified for the introduction of the S-Bahn service every 20 minutes. A feasibility study was commissioned in 2018; A second stage in the form of electrification of the section from Gummersbach to Lüdenscheid will also be examined. Electrification would also enable a regional express connection Lüdenscheid - Cologne. The first results should be presented to the local authorities in March 2019. A first interim status of the study was presented in November 2019, according to which it is possible to electrify the route and set up an S-Bahn line between Cologne and Marienheide every 20 minutes. More than 300 million euros must be invested in the infrastructure for the improved offer. As part of the report, it was determined that the S-Bahn line to Gummersbach and Marienheide achieved an economic benefit. A superimposed fast regional traffic in addition to the S-Bahn is not seen as economically feasible. For the remaining section of the RB 25 Gummersbach / Marienheide - Lüdenscheid line, considerations are being made to separate the connection and to carry out the traffic with alternative drive technologies.

Operating locations (selection)

Vollme station

The Vollme station was demolished in 2009. When the line between Meinerzhagen and Bruges was reactivated in December 2017, Vollme was not reactivated as a stop.

Gummersbach train station

The Gummersbach station consists of only two tracks, one of which was a stump track on the platform until the end of 2013. The station building of the Gummersbach train station was demolished in January 2012, and a second platform was to be built in its place, along with other renovations that began in March 2009 with the relocation of the entry point.

In the course of the reopening of the line to Meinerzhagen, the Gummersbach station was rebuilt. The new platform is completely covered and accessible from both sides. An underpass enables direct access to the Gummersbach campus of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences . The station is now completely barrier-free.

In November 2009 a bridge was built in the Gummersbach station area, on which the train has since crossed the road to the Steinmüller site.

Kotthausen station

The Kotthausen train station was opened in 1893. The station paid for itself quickly, as four localities accessed this station. However, since freight traffic was more important because of two quarries in the catchment area, the station was only opened for passenger traffic from 1898. The station had an extensive track structure for small stations.

With the opening of the Leppetalbahn in 1900, it lost a little traffic share. In 1908 the station was expanded to a large extent. The station survived the Second World War without major damage, in February 1945 an aerial bomb hit a steam locomotive and damaged the signal box. After an accident in one of the quarries, freight train traffic gradually declined. The last time a CityBahn stopped at Kotthausen station was in 1987.

The station was not taken into account during the reactivation, and there are no plans for the future.
