The Volme is a 50.5 km long orographic left tributary of the Ruhr . Of this, 20.8 km are in the urban area of Hagen .

The source of the Volme is located on the south-eastern outskirts of Meinerzhagen at 460 m above sea level. NN and one kilometer east of the Agger spring .
It flows through, accompanied by the Volmetal train and the B54 , including the cities of Meinerzhagen and Kierspe , the district Oberbrügge the city Halver , the Lüdenscheider district Bruges , the districts Schalksmühle and Dahlerbrück the town of Schalksmühle and neighborhoods Rummenohl , priory , Dahl , Ambrock , Eilpe , Mitte and Eckesey of the independent city of Hagen. In the urban area of Hagen it is canalised over larger stretches, but has been partially renatured.
The Volme finally empties at an altitude of 91 m above sea level. NN in Hagen from the left into the Ruhr.

The 427.82 km² catchment area of the Volme is drained into the North Sea via the Ruhr and Rhine .

In the pre-industrial age, numerous mills , hammer mills and scythe smiths were built along the river , which used the hydropower of this steadily flowing body of water via pre-ponds , on which the Brandenburg small iron industry of the 19th and 20th centuries was based.
