history

Schalksmühle around 1795
Town center with Church of the Redeemer

The oldest documented mention of today's district of Hülscheid comes from 1308 and can be found in the Liber valoris of the Archdiocese of Cologne . In 1350 the local farmers founded a free county. At the time of its greatest expansion, this included the north-western part of the parish of Lüdenscheid in addition to the parish of Hülscheid. The Free County of Hülscheid existed until 1592. In that year it was transferred to the Lüdenscheider Hochgrafen. The existence of a free court on site has been proven for the period after 1478 , which, however, had existed for much longer.

Schalksmühle was first mentioned in a document on May 1, 1407. On the occasion of the donation of an altar to the Breckerfeld church by the Cologne merchant Gerwin of Altenbreckerfeld, a document from the Archbishop of Cologne Friedrich Schalksmollen appears in parrochia Halvere (Schalksmühle in the parish of Halver). It was one of the areas leased from Gerwin. Even after the construction of a paved road through the Volmetal from 1845-1847 and the Volmetalbahn until 1873, it was still a small settlement for some time. Only gradually did stronger growth and industrialization set in due to the improved transport connections. From 1892 to 1898 the neo-Gothic hall church was built as the center of the town. In 1888 the "Hälvertalbahn" of the Altenaer Eisenbahn district was completed, which established a direct connection with Halver. On October 1, 1912, the community was re-formed by hiving off from the community of Halver .

Incorporations

The present community of Schalksmühle was formed by the law on the reorganization of the Altena district and the independent town of Lüdenscheid of December 18, 1968. For this purpose, the previous communities of Schalksmühle and Hülscheid ( Lüdenscheid Office ) were merged. The large community, which was newly formed with effect from January 1, 1969, again bears the name “Schalksmühle”.

Through the law on the reorganization of the Ennepe-Ruhr district of December 16, 1969 (GV. NW. P. 940), the district of Im Dahl , which belonged to the then town of Breckerfeld (Breckerfeld district, Ennepe-Ruhr district), was incorporated into what is now Dahlerbrück . This took effect on January 1, 1970.

Religions

Since August 2018 there is only one parish of the Protestant parish of Schalksmühle-Dahlerbrück - previously there were two parishes - as well as the Protestant parish of Hülscheid-Heedfeld. There is also a Catholic community (Halver-Schalksmühle-Breckerfeld-Dahl) and a Free Evangelical Church .

coat of arms

Schalksmühle coat of arms
Blazon : "The coat of arms shows a three-rowed bar in nine fields, each from red to silver, on a gold background, with a half black paddle wheel growing above it, including three green holly leaves (ilex) arrangedin a bouquet."
Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms of the municipality combines symbols of the two municipalities combined in 1969. The mill wheel stands for Schalksmühle, the leaves of the holly ( Ilex aquifolium ), also known as Hülsebusch, as a speaking symbol for Hülscheid. In the middle is the Brandenburg chess bar from the county of Mark . Until 1969 the community of Schalksmühle had a similar coat of arms, only the base of the shield was empty. The earlier coat of arms of the municipality of Hülscheid had the Ilex branches in the upper area, but was otherwise identical to that of Schalksmühle. Both coats of arms were designed by the heraldist Otto Hupp , based on ideas from Fritz Thomée , the former district administrator of the Altena district .

The coat of arms was awarded on January 16 (Hülscheid) and March 29, 1935 (Schalksmühle).

Official seal

The municipality has the municipal coat of arms in its official seal, which has been approved by a certificate from the district president in Arnsberg dated July 21, 1970.

flag

The municipality was granted the right to carry a flag and a banner by a certificate from the District President in Arnsberg dated March 30, 1972.

“The flag ( hoist flag ) is striped lengthways from green to red in two strips of equal width, in the middle slightly shifted towards the pole, the coat of arms of the municipality.
The banner is striped lengthways from green to red in two equal widths, in the middle of the upper half of the coat of arms of the municipality. "

Town twinning

Since July 1987 there has been a town partnership with the Thuringian town of Ruhla . The partnership with the English city of Wansbeck has existed since 1970 . A young man from Schalksmühle was working in Bedlington at the time and there met his future wife. When the couple returned to Schalksmühle, they suggested a partnership between their two hometowns, which was officially sealed in 1970. After Bedlington was united with Ashington and Newbiggin-by-the-Sea to form the new city of Wansbeck in 1974, the partnership was continued by the new city.
