Fritz Thomée

Fritz Thomée (born July 24, 1862 in Werdohl ; † December 1944 ) was a German administrative lawyer and district administrator for the Altena district .

Life

Fritz Thomée was born as the son of a long-established Reidemeister family, his father was the Kommerzienrat Heinrich Thomée. He attended the Archigymnasium in Soest and studied law at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and received his doctorate. He then worked for several years as a trainee lawyer and assessor at the Arnsberg district government .

In 1901 Thomée was elected district administrator for the Altena district. During his term of office, the construction of dams , the expansion of traffic routes and welfare in the district as well as the promotion of agriculture and forestry fall . Altena received a new district building and Altena Castle was rebuilt. In 1927 he retired.

In 1906 he married Lily Herbers from Iserlohn , whom he had known and loved for a long time. She was the daughter of the Kommerzienrat Heinrich Herbers. The couple had three children.

Hunting was a great hobby of Thomée. He was friends with Richard Schirrmann , the founder of the world's first youth hostel at Altena Castle.

Fritz Thomée and his wife Lily died in quick succession in December 1944.

Preservation of Altena Castle

Fritz Thomée was significantly involved in measures to preserve Altena Castle at the beginning of the 20th century and co-founder of the Sauerland Mountain Association and the Westphalian Heimatbund .

In spring 1906 he initiated the founding of the Märkischer Burgverein. The association served the reconstruction of Altena Castle. The aim was to complete the reconstruction by 1909, since then the 300th anniversary of the membership of the County of Mark to Prussia was due. Even after his retirement from political life in 1927, Thomée remained chairman of the association. He was also active in the association for local and home studies in the Süderlande (the forerunner of today's "Friends of Altena Castle").

An essential contribution to the preservation of the castle was the transfer of the castle and its collections into the possession of the Altena district in 1942, which he initiated. This fulfilled his life's work.

Art collector

Since the turn of the century, Fritz Thomée was also an avid art collector. His property, which at the end of his life comprised over 900 positions, included a. Works by Rogier van der Weyden , Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt . After the collection was initially divided among his heirs, his grandson Werner Marks has been trying to gradually reunite all the pieces in one hand since the 1990s. In addition, he has all works processed in terms of art history and restoration.

Others

Fritz Thomée was made an honorary citizen by the cities of Werdohl and Altena. Today there is Fritz-Thomée-Platz in Werdohl and Fritz-Thomée-Straße in Altena, which leads to the wire museum and the castle.
