history

The name Hülscheid is generally derived from the Hülsbusch, the Ilex ( European holly ), which occurs extensively in the wild in the Hülscheid district . The former municipal coat of arms accordingly contains three green ilex leaves on a golden background, growing above the three rows of red and silver pegged bars of the county of Mark . The basic word is a -scheid -name, which refers to the location on a mountain range.

The oldest written mention of Hülscheid comes from the year 1350, when the local free farmers founded a free county. This had its greatest expansion in 1478, when it included the north-western part of the parish Lüdenscheid in addition to its own parish .

History of the parish village of Hülscheid

Until the 19th century, Hülscheid belonged to the Midder farmers of the parish of Hülscheid. The municipality and estate district statistics of the province of Westphalia in 1871 listed the place as a village with 28 houses and 176 inhabitants.
