history

Berkey belonged to the Midder peasantry of the parish Hülscheid until the 19th century . From 1816 the place was part of the municipality of Hülscheid in the mayor's office of Halver in the Altena district , in 1818 five residents lived in the place. The place categorized as a courtyard under the name Berkey according to the location and distance table of the government district Arnsberg had two houses in 1839. At that time, five residents lived in the village, all of whom were evangelicals.

In 1844 the municipality of Hülscheid with Berkey was split off from the Halver Office and assigned to the newly established Lüdenscheid Office .

The place is unlabeled on the Prussian first recording from 1840, there the neighboring place Felde is incorrectly labeled as Berke . From the Prussian new admission in 1892, the location is recorded on the TK25 measurement table as Berkei , from the 1955 edition as Berkey .

The municipality and estate district statistics of the province of Westphalia in 1871 listed the place as a farm under the name Berkey with one house and seven residents. The municipality lexicon for the province of Westphalia in 1885 gives a number of 16 residents for Berkey who lived in two houses. In 1895 the place had two houses with nine inhabitants under the name Berkei , in 1905 two houses and 16 inhabitants were given.

In 1969, the communities of Hülscheid and Schalksmühle were merged to form the large community ( unified community ) of Schalksmühle in the Altena district and since then Berkey has belonged politically to Schalksmühle, which became part of the newly created Märkisches Kreis in 1975 due to the Sauerland / Paderborn law .
