Until the 19th century, Schnarüm belonged to the Midder peasantry of the parish of Hülscheid . From 1816 the place was part of the municipality of Hülscheid in the mayor's office of Halver in the Altena district , in 1818 eight residents lived in the place. The place, which was categorized as a courtyard according to the location and distance table of the government district of Arnsberg , had two houses in 1839, a factory or mill and two agricultural buildings. At that time, nine people lived in the village, all of whom were evangelicals.

In the 19th century, two regional roads crossed near Schnarüm, two of which were developed and classified as state road 692. In 1844, the municipality of Hülscheid with Schnarüm was split off from the Halver office and assigned to the newly established Lüdenscheid office .

The place is recorded on the Prussian first recording from 1840 under the name Schnarüm . From the Prussian new admission of 1892, the place is recorded on the TK25 measuring table as Schnarüm .

The municipality and district statistics of the province of Westphalia in 1871 listed the place under the name Schnarüm with three houses and 17 inhabitants. The municipality lexicon for the province of Westphalia in 1885 gives Schnarüm a number of 25 inhabitants who lived in two houses. In 1895 the place had two houses with 24 inhabitants, in 1905 two houses and 18 inhabitants are given.

In 1969, the municipalities of Hülscheid and Schalksmühle were merged to form an unofficial municipality ( unitary municipality ) of Schalksmühle in the Altena district, and Schnarüm has since been politically part of Schalksmühle, which became part of the newly created Märkische Kreis in 1975 due to the Sauerland / Paderborn law .

In 1971, the federal motorway 45, which passed by the site, was opened and the Lüdenscheid-Nord junction merges into state road 692 near Schnarüm.
