Until the 19th century, Altenhülscheid belonged to the Midder peasantry of the parish of Hülscheid . From 1816 the place was part of the municipality Hülscheid in the mayor's office Halver in the Altena district , in 1818 54 inhabitants lived in the place. The place, categorized as a courtyard according to the location and distance table of the government district of Arnsberg , had eleven residential buildings, a factory or mill and eight agricultural buildings in 1839. At that time there were 62 residents living in the village, all of whom were evangelicals.

In 1844 the municipality of Hülscheid with Altenhülscheid was split off from the Halver office and assigned to the newly established Lüdenscheid office .

The place is recorded on the Prussian first recording from 1840 under the name AltH (ülscheid). From the Prussian new admission in 1892, the place is recorded on the TK25 measuring table as Altenhülscheid .

The municipality and estate district statistics of the province of Westphalia in 1871 listed the place as a farm under the name Altenhülscheid with two houses and 83 inhabitants. The municipality encyclopedia for the province of Westphalia in 1885 gives a number of 64 residents for Altenhülscheid who lived in ten houses. In 1895 the place had ten houses with 65 inhabitants, in 1905 nine houses and 56 inhabitants are given.

In 1969, the municipalities of Hülscheid and Schalksmühle were merged to form the large municipality ( unified municipality ) of Schalksmühle in the Altena district, and since then Altenhülscheid has belonged politically to Schalksmühle, which in 1975 became part of the newly created Märkische Kreis due to the Sauerland / Paderborn law .
