Camping ground at the root of the Oestertalsperre

Herscheid lies in the mountainous landscape of the Sauerland in the southeastern Märkisches Kreis. To the south of the community rises the Nordhelle , at 663 m the highest mountain in the Ebbegebirge . This is where the Ebbebach rises , which is dammed up on the eastern border to the Oestertalsperre . The Verse and Fürwiggetalsperre lie west of Herscheid. The town is bounded to the west on the Gasmert (534 m above sea level), partly on the Herscheider municipality.

Black ahe

In the northwest flows the Schwarze Ahe , which flows into the verse in Werdohl -Altenmühle . The Bruchbach, which rises in the nature reserve "Auf dem Roten Schlote", flows east of the center into the Weisse Ahe and flows into the Else in Hüinghausen . To the north, the municipality extends to the Sirriner Berg (460 m above sea level) and to the Osthelle (418 m above sea level). The lowest point of Herscheid is in the valley of the Schwarzen Ahe at an altitude of 250 m above sea level. NN.

geology

The northern part of the community area is in the Lüdenscheider Mulde. The Herscheider Ebbe around Herscheid represents the north central part of the Ebbe Mountains . The Herscheider layers in the Ebbe Saddle belong to the Ordovician and consist of black slate and sandstones of the Middle Ordovician and Lower Ordovician . Various fossils were found in the rock layers near Kiesbert.

Expansion of the municipal area and land use

The municipal boundary between Herscheid and Plettenberg still runs at the level of the Landwehr between Wellin and Welliner Baum .

Forest areas make up the largest part of the municipality with 58.3 percent, followed by agricultural areas with 32.4 percent. 8.4 percent are settlements and traffic areas, 0.9 percent other areas. With 124 inhabitants per square meter, Herscheid has the lowest settlement density in the Märkisches Kreis.

climate

The Herscheider climate is shaped by the Atlantic. The prevailing westerly winds are responsible for this. Characteristic are the relatively large amounts of precipitation and the moderate temperatures for the altitude. July is the warmest month with an average of around 15.6 ° C and January is the coldest month at −0.4 ° C. The mean annual temperature is 7.7 ° C. The annual rainfall amounts to 997 l / m².

history

Middle Ages and Early Modern Times

In 1072 the Archbishop of Cologne transferred the church and site to the newly founded Grafschaft monastery . The place later belonged to the county of Mark . It is unusual that the counts granted hunting rights in the Herscheider Mark even before the 15th century. The background is said to have been that the farmers had helped to protect Count Engelbert III, who was captured in the Ebbegebirge . to free. Further privileges were an own judicial office, timber and fishing rights. The place was the seat of a free court in the late Middle Ages . The first reports begin in 1386/87. The sources end in 1499/1512. At least in one case, the court was involved in a nationally significant procedure. Overall, the number of cases was low compared to other courts. During the Thirty Years' War and two major village fires, in 1686 and 1862, the older building fabric was largely destroyed. Only the massive Apostle Church of today was partially spared . The reconstruction after 1862 took place mainly in solid construction.

Mining history

Silberblick mine on the mine trail

In addition to agriculture in the numerous hamlets , ore mining and metal processing have always been important in the municipality. Old mining tunnels on the Silberg are evidence of this . The written tradition of mining on silver goes back to the 17th century. In the 18th century, the business was continued very limited. New pits were sunk in the 19th century, but they were soon abandoned. There were also numerous other pits and mines. Overall, the delivery rate in the Herscheid area was limited. An educational trail has been a reminder of mining since the late 1970s.

The Ahe and Elsetal were traditional commercial locations in the succession of pre- and early industrial production sites like the Ahe-Hammers . There were numerous racing fire huts in the vicinity, more powerful iron smiths since the 13th century and later, from the 15th century, also hydropower-powered systems for iron production and processing. The plants were mostly operated by entrepreneurs called Reidemeister . In particular the Osemundschmieden d. H. the refining of pig iron for the production of malleable material were important. Initially, the facilities were still connected to smelting, later the iron was mostly obtained from Siegerland and, to a lesser extent, from the Duchy of Westphalia .

19th and 20th centuries

As part of the introduction of the rural community order for the province of Westphalia, the mayor's offices were transferred to offices in the 1840s . Since then, the Herscheid office has belonged to the Altena district with seven other offices and a total of 19 communities .

At the beginning of the 19th century there were still 8 to 10 traditional iron processing plants. The farms themselves only needed a few workers. But indirect earning opportunities existed through the production of charcoal or for the transport of raw materials and the export of goods, often as far as the Bergisches Land. With the advent of the coal-powered puddle works from around the 1830s, the Osemund forges disappeared. In connection with poor agricultural conditions, this led to an economic crisis in the 1840s, which was eventually overcome by concentrating on agriculture and the settlement of a few new commercial operations.

Agriculture was not very productive due to the altitude and the sometimes poor soil. There was also the small business structure. In addition to a few full farmers, there were numerous small farmers who could keep a few cows and had a draft animal. The Kötter were also small businesses . Their possession was at most sufficient for self-sufficiency and the main income came from commercial work. After the Second World War, most of the small and very small businesses gave up, leaving only a few larger and more efficient farms.

The first train from Herscheid to Plettenberg

On July 8, 1915, the Plettenberg – Herscheid railway was opened after the last stagecoach had reached Plettenberg from Herscheid. After the revolution of 1918/19 , the number of social democratic supporters in Herscheid increased, without a local association of its own. The bourgeois parties such as the DVP and the DNVP were also active in the area. The local pastor openly advocated the latter right-wing party. In addition, local groups of the Stahlhelm and the Young German Order emerged . At the beginning of the 1930s, the NSDAP also began to gain a foothold. The KPD was also active in Herscheid during this time.

In the Reichstag elections in November 1932 , the NSDAP already got around 45.51%. This was significantly more than the national average (33.1%). The SPD (19.72%) and the KPD (19.58%) were roughly equally strong. Without a significant Catholic population, the center (0.95%) played no role. The DNVP came in at 9.28%. All other parties were already marginalized (DVP 1.39%, possibly People's Service 1.61%, German State Party 1.97%). In the Reichstag elections of March 1933, the NSDAP clearly dominated political life with 66.24%. In this election too, the party in Herscheid was significantly stronger than at the national level (43.9%). The SPD was almost able to hold its own with 16.36%, while the KPD (5.79%) suffered the biggest slump. The DNVP, which was now called the Black-White-Red Battle Front, came in at 7.56%. The other parties continued to play no role (Center 0.46%, DVP 0.91%, Ev. People's Service 1.32%, German State Party 1.37%)

After the beginning of the National Socialist era , political and social life were switched on in the same way, as everywhere in Germany, and political opponents were eliminated. Since there were no Jewish residents, the persecution of the Jews is not directly reflected in Herscheid. There were considerable disputes in the Protestant parish between the regime-loyal German Christians over the incumbent pastor and the women's aid , which was close to the professing church .

The community was spared from the bombing for a long time. Only a few emergency drops caused damage. In the spring of 1945 the Second World War also reached Herscheid. In connection with the Ruhrkesselschlacht an army weapons school was moved to Herscheid. Defense preparations were also made. As the front drew closer, the low-flying attacks increased. From around April 11th, there was fighting between German and American units. On the morning of April 13th, the Americans entered Herscheid. The German troops shot at the enemy from the Herscheider mill. Various buildings were damaged in the fighting. Civilians and soldiers were wounded and killed during the fighting. The choir of the Apostle Church was also hit and the baroque altar was destroyed.

Herscheider town center

In the period after the Second World War, the main settlement areas of Herscheid-Dorf and Hüinghausen grew strongly. The reception of displaced persons and refugees also played a role in the growth of the place. In the immediate post-war period, over 850 people came to Herscheid. This corresponds to about 18% of the population. Larger single-family house areas were created, and an improved road development made Herscheid an interesting place to live for commuters working in Lüdenscheid or Plettenberg.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1969, parts of the area of the dissolved municipality of Lüdenscheid-Land were incorporated. Herscheid came to the new Lüdenscheid district and in 1975 to the Märkischer Kreis .

Religions

The southern Sauerland in the Mark region was Christianized by the 9th century at the latest. In 1072, Archbishop Anno II of Cologne transferred the church in Hertsceido to the Grafschaft monastery, among other things . From the middle of the 13th century, Herscheid was probably an independent parish. In 1552 the community became Protestant. It is part of the presbyteral-synodal tradition of the Church in County Mark. The number of Catholic residents remained low well into the 20th century. Only when a significant number of Catholics were in the community with large labor camps in the 1930s were Catholic services held again. As a result, a community developed that built its own church in the 1960s.

Denomination statistics

In 2011, 50.6% (3,725 inhabitants) of the population were Protestant and 19.1% (1,404 inhabitants) were Catholic. 2,234 inhabitants (30.3%) had a different belief or were without religion. The number of Catholics has decreased since then. Currently (as of December 31, 2019) 17.9% (1,245) of the 6,954 residents are Catholic

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the municipality of Herscheid

Blazon
The coat of arms shows in gold the bar of the Count von der Mark, made of red and silver in three lines, from which a growing red stag rises.

Description
The coat of arms of the municipality of Herscheid shows the chessboard pattern of the county of Mark . Above it, a deer is depicted, which, like the hunter in the coat of arms of the former municipality of Valbert, symbolizes the hunting privileges that Duke Johann III. were awarded by Kleve . In addition, he also refers to an interpretation of the place name, which is said to go back to "Hirsch". The coat of arms was awarded to the community in 1935 and is based on a design by Professor O. Schupp.

Culture and sights

The Schützenhalle / community hall in the center of Herscheid is available for cultural events. In the district of Hüinghausen there is a second larger event location, the Ramberghalle. MGV Constantia Herscheid uses the town hall's citizen hall for its matinee concerts. Among other things, cabaret events take place here. Herscheid does not have a theater stage . The closest larger theater is in Hagen .

Museums

The Märkische Museum-Eisenbahn (Märkische Museum-Eisenbahn) runs from the district of Hüinghausen to Plettenberg -Köbbinghauser Hammer. The Spieker became the property of the municipality in 2005. He is looked after by the history and homeland association. The Heimatstube set up there can be visited at regular intervals on weekends or on request.

Buildings

Spieker
Robert Kolb Tower
  • Apostle Church : The beginnings of today's church building date back to the 11th century. The church was first mentioned in 1072 when Archbishop Anno II of Cologne donated it to the newly founded Grafschaft monastery. The Romanesque church is a three-aisled hall church with a suggested transept, a late Gothic choir and a west tower. The former late Gothic altar from the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century has not been in the church since 1881 and is now in the castle museum Altena . Since 1971 the church has been called the "Apostle Church". The reason for this name was the works of art decorating the interior of the church: On the one hand, the fresco depicting the apostles of the church on the northern wall of the choir; on the other hand, the figures in the niches to the right and left of the chancel and on the tower wall; thirdly, the images of the apostles from the Baroque period that decorate the walls of the church today . Without a doubt the most valuable piece is probably the choir stalls from 1548.
  • Spieker : The 300-year-old Spieker is a landmark for the Ebbe community. The half-timbered building was used to accommodate the natural materials that had to be brought to the church. The structural origin probably dates back to the 17th century. The actual main building was built around 1800 in its current form.
  • Ahe hammer : The hammer was first mentioned in 1562. It was run by the Brünninghaus family until 1942. This is where the Osemunde iron was made, from which the wire was then drawn. The two hammers are driven directly by their own water wheel, a second water wheel is used to generate wind at the two forge fires. The entire system can still be operated today. In 1950 it was installed as a museum showpiece.
  • Robert Kolb Tower : The tower stands on the 663.3 meter high northern light . On September 21, 1913, after a year of construction, the 18-meter-high Robert Kolb Tower was inaugurated.

Protected areas for nature

The entire municipality has been part of the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park since 2015 . From 1964 to 2015 the community was part of the Ebbegebirge Nature Park . A large part of the municipal area was designated as a landscape protection area in 1964 with the establishment of the nature park . From February 1, 1985, there was the Plettenberg-Herscheid-Neuenrade landscape plan . The Herscheid landscape plan has existed for the municipality since October 23, 1998, and was not included in the Plettenberg-Herscheid-Neuenrade landscape plan . In the landscape plan area, the areas of Herscheid outside the built-up districts and the scope of a development plan are designated as a landscape protection area, unless a higher protection status, such as a nature reserve (NSG), exists. A first change to this landscape plan has been in force since November 4, 2005.

There are 15 nature reserves (NSG) in the municipality of Herscheid . As one of the first nature reserves in the Sauerland, the Wolfsbruch nature reserve with a size of 3.1 hectares was designated as early as 1930 . In 2012 the NSG Wolfsbruch was enlarged to 16.9 ha. The other 14 NSGs were identified with the Herscheid 1998 landscape plan. These are the nature reserves Brauke (9.5 ha), Kammoor (2.7 ha), Buschhauser Siepen (1.5 ha), Herveler Bruch (13.5 ha), Sonnenhohl (9.5 ha), Auf the Gasmert (5.2 ha), Bulmecke (0.4 ha), Auf dem Roten Schlote (5.4 ha), Im Wiebruch (3 ha), Nümmert (0.9 ha), Upper Elsetal (5.3 ha ), Herveler Bachtal (3.6 ha), Katerlöh (2.8 ha) and Hochsteiner Moor (2.6 ha). Six nature reserves in the municipal area were also designated as part of the Ebbemoore with the number DE 4812-301 as a European protected area ( FFH areas ). Parts of this FFH area are also in the urban area of Meinerzhagen.

With the two landscape plans in the municipality, 34 natural monuments were identified. In 27 cases, these are individual trees or groups of trees and in seven cases flat natural monuments such as caves, rocks, etc. The natural monument Schönebecker Höhle is also designated as FFH area Schönebecker Höhle DE-4711-302. The 118 m long Schönebeck Cave was closed with a grating to protect bats from the public. There are also 86 protected landscape elements in the municipality . In the municipality there are numerous legally protected biotopes according to § 30 BNatSchG , which are also in areas of other protection categories.

In addition to other bird species, the large bird species black stork and red kite occur in Herscheid .

Sports

Herscheid outdoor pool

Various sports clubs are registered in Herscheid that offer budo sports, aviation, running, athletics, mini golf, cycling, tennis and gymnastics , among others . Thanks to the mountainous landscape, alpine winter sports are also possible at the Nordhelle, where a lift is operated when the snow conditions allow. The 12 km long Ebbekamm trail is also located here. In summer, the nearby dams are ideal for inline skating, cycling and walking. Swimming can be done in the warm water outdoor pool . The Richard-Schirrmann-Weg leads from Werdohl via Herscheid to Siegburg.

Regular events

In 1950, the shooting club in Herscheid held its annual shooting festival. Since 1984 the rifle club has also held community championships in air rifle shooting. Since 1990 there has been a Christmas market in Herscheid on the second weekend of Advent.

On the second weekend in August, the so-called Räriner Mountain Festival has been taking place in the Herscheid district of Rärin for several years . The annual pumpkin festival in Rärin has been held since 2001, always on October 3rd.

Economy and Infrastructure

Companies

Factory building of the Gustav Alberts and Kober company

The industry in Herscheid is mainly characterized by suppliers for the automotive industry. With Gustav Alberts GmbH (GAH), a leading manufacturer of home and garden products is also based in the community.

On the market

traffic

Herscheid has always been away from major traffic routes. In 1832 a regular stagecoach connection with Lüdenscheid and Plettenberg was established. In 1846/1847 a road between the two neighboring cities via Herscheid was developed as a road .

Transportation

Hüinghausen station

Since the closure of passenger traffic on the Plettenberg – Herscheid railway line in 1965 (for goods traffic 1969), Herscheid can only be reached by bus in local public transport. Today, the connection is mainly provided by the Märkische Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) and the Herscheid public bus . With the bus lines 54 (regional bus line), 254 (school bus line) and N7 (night bus line), the neighboring cities of Plettenberg and Lüdenscheid and the train stations in Plettenberg and Lüdenscheid can be reached in around 20 to 30 minutes.

At the beginning of the 20th century there were plans to link the Volmetalbahn (Hagen – Dieringhausen) with the Plettenberg – Herscheid railway line in the urban area of Lüdenscheid and Herscheid and thus create a connection between the Volme and Lennetal. However, this failed due to the high construction costs. The frequency of use of the completed section remained low for passenger traffic until it was closed in 1965.

The section would have covered around 33.9 kilometers. Due to the mountainous topography in the Sauerland , the planning envisaged mighty tunnels, bridges or underpasses, such as on the ridge between the Verse and Ahetal, where a tunnel of 650 meters in length was planned. Another tunnel would have run in Herscheid from the Helle to below the Schützenhalle, with a length of approx. 300 meters. A total of four tunnels with a total length of 2175 meters were to be built. The estimated costs for this amounted to 1.84 million marks. The Royal Railway Directorate put the total costs for the railway line at 9.8 million marks, which would have been 289,100 marks per rail kilometer.

Road traffic

The nearest motorway exit with signs for Herscheid is Lüdenscheid Süd on the A 45 . Herscheid can be reached after about 6 kilometers via the L 561. The B 229 runs in the Versetal in the immediate vicinity of the municipality.

Air traffic

Plettenberg-Hüinghausen airfield

The Plettenberg-Hüinghausen airfield, classified as a special landing site , is located in the Hüinghausen district. The closest airports for international flights are Dortmund , around 60 km away, Cologne / Bonn around 75 km away and Düsseldorf around 110 km away.

media

The regional daily newspaper is the Süderländer Tageblatt . The local radio for North Rhine-Westphalia is carried out in Herscheid by Radio MK , to which the broadcasting location no. 73 frequency 100.2 is assigned by the State Agency for Media. Herscheid is part of the editorial area of Studio Siegen, a local broadcaster of the WDR .

education

There are two primary schools in Herscheid. The Rahlenbergschule (a secondary school) was built in 1964 and closed on July 4, 2014 due to a lack of pupils. The Volmetal adult education center in Herscheid offers a large number of courses in the rooms of the former secondary school.
