The nature reserve (NSG) was designated in 1998 by the Märkischer Kreis with the landscape plan No. 5 Herscheid . In the northeast, the NSG borders directly on Landstrasse 707. The NSG is located on the southeastern mountain slope of the Herveler Kopf .

The NSG Brauke was designated in 2004 as part of the FFH area Ebbemoore with the number DE 4812-301 and a size of 1,068 ha. Five other areas are located in the municipality of Herscheid. Large parts of this FFH area are also located in the Meinerzhagen urban area .

Area description

NSG is a forest area. Parts of the forest are black alder quarry forests interspersed with red spruce trees . To the south of the quarry forest area, on a steep north-northwest slope, there is an old red beech forest rich in dead wood with isolated sessile oaks and sand birches . The multi-stemmed beech trees indicate a former coppice forest management. On the upper slope, the beech forest changes into a light birch break forest. A source brook of the Ebbebach flows along the L 707 with a wooded border made of black alder and sycamore maple. The quarry forest area has a peat layer with larger pads of peat moss. In the herb layer, whistle grass as well as lawn and wiry bitches form aspects. Numerous endangered plant and insect species are recorded in the NSG. At the time of the NSG designation, there were several drainage ditches in the NSG, which meant that some areas were already heavily dried out.
