The nature reserve Wolfsbruch currently has a size of 16.9 ha . It is located on the southern edge of the municipality of Herscheid . The southern edge of the nature reserve (NSG) borders the town of Meinerzhagen and the local nature reserve Auf'm Ebbe / Ebbemoore. The NSG is located about 700 east of the summit of the 663.3 meter high Nordhelle on its northeast slope.

The Wolfbruch was first designated as a nature reserve in 1930 with a size of 3.1 hectares. In 1940 and 1965 the Hangmoor Wolfsbruch NSG was again designated with a size of 3.1 hectares. The Wolfsbruch nature reserve was also retained in the landscape plan from 1985. On December 5, 2012, the Wolfsbruch NSG was enlarged to 16.9 hectares with the 2nd change to the landscape plan No. 1 Plettenberg-Herscheid-Neuenrade.

The NSG Wolfsbruch was designated as a part of the Ebbemoore with the number DE 4812-301 as a European protected area ( FFH areas ).

Protection purpose

According to the nature reserve designation, the area was designated as a nature reserve for the maintenance, development and restoration of a hill spring moor complex with specially adapted flora and fauna; for the maintenance, development and restoration of near-natural deciduous forests, in particular bog, birch, alder and beech forest; for the preservation of soils worthy of protection such as Anmoorgleye, fens, Moorstagnogleye, Stagnogleye and Anmoorstagnogleye. Furthermore, in order to contribute to the safeguarding of the ecological network Natura 2000 of the EU in the sense of the Habitats Directive and also to the preservation and development of communities and habitats of wild, partly endangered animal and plant species. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.

Special prohibitions

Some special prohibitions have been set in the NSG regulation. The indigenous bog forests and grove beech forests may not be used for forestry purposes. The only exception is the use of single logs in accordance with the Lower Landscape Authority . Reforestation with conifers or other tree species that are not naturally indigenous and suitable for the location is also prohibited. It is also forbidden to move wood with vehicles outside of the paths and back lanes; Create forestry roads or upgrade them to a higher level; Carry out soil protection liming in the bog and spring areas; the creation of hunting facilities and the implementation of conservation measures such as B. high-seat construction, planting wild grazing areas, feeding, spreading artificial breeding grounds. When hunting, the erection of open ladders and the feeding of game in times of need in accordance with the feeding ordinance of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia are excluded from the prohibitions.

Special commandments

In the NSG regulation two special requirements were set. The softwood stocks and incorrect forest coverings in the sense of the protective purpose are to be converted into indigenous hardwood. In the stream valleys and source areas, the red spruce and red spruce natural regeneration are to be eliminated.

Hazards and protective measures

The moor is endangered by drainage and water abstraction. There is also bush cover and thus the moor area overgrowth. As protective measures, according to the specialist information system of the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection in North Rhine-Westphalia, hunting must be restricted, the NSG expanded, a buffer zone created around the NSG and vegetation control carried out (prevent encroachment).
