The Ebelsberg parish church is located in the Ebelsberg district of Linz in Upper Austria . The Roman Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist belongs to the dean's office Linz-Süd in the diocese of Linz . The church is a listed building .

history

Ebelsberg has been an independent parish since 1250, belonging to the St. Florian Monastery. In 1263 the church was mentioned for the first time. In 1778 Kleinmünchen became a branch of Ebelsberg, and an independent parish since 1892. In 1787 the parish cemetery , which was originally located next to the church, was relocated to its current location (Wiener Straße / Florianer Straße). In 1809 the church was destroyed by fire in the entire Ebelsberg market due to fighting by Napoleon's troops. In 1829 the rebuilt parish church was consecrated by Bishop Gregor Thomas Ziegler .

In 1908 the chancel was designed as the only Art Nouveau apse in Upper Austria with mosaics by the Bad Leonfelden artist Leopold Forstner and reliefs by Wilhelm Bormann . she shows

The mosaic in the hemispherical vault shows the eaves of Christ with John the Baptist. A convert and a doubter are kneeling next to them. Christ himself is only shown as a lamb standing on 7 sources of the Jordan in the rainbow colors.

In 1939 the market town of Ebelsberg was incorporated into Linz. Between 1953 and 1959 the cemetery was redesigned and the cemetery chapel, which was consecrated as a branch church in 1998, was built. From 2007 to 2009 a new parish center with carillon was built.
