Gregor Thomas Ziegler
Gregor (ius) Thomas (von) Ziegler OSB (born March 7, 1770 in Kirchheim in Swabia , † April 15, 1852 in Linz ) was Bishop of Tarnów and Linz .
Life
Ziegler was born in the Kirchheim market in Swabia in the Fugger rule of the same name as the fourth child of the farmers Jakob and Franziska Ziegler (née Kiederle) in their parents' “Braterhof” (today Fuggerian estate). He attended school with the Benedictines in Ottobeuren from 1781 to 1787 , entered the Benedictine monastery of Wiblingen as a novice in 1788 and made solemn vows on April 26, 1791. He completed his studies in Freiburg im Breisgau. On 25 May 1793, he was in constant for priests ordained and was later a professor at the high school in Wiblingen, Constance and Freiburg . In 1801 he became prior in Wiblingen and after the secularization of the monastery in 1806 he moved to the Benedictine Abbey of Tyniec near Cracow . At the same time he was a professor of dogmatics at the University of Krakow . In 1810 he became professor of church history at the Lyceum in Linz and in 1815 professor of dogmatics at the University of Vienna .
It was on February 5, 1822 by Emperor I Franz Bishop of Tyniec appointed and on June 29 of that year gave him the Archbishop of Olomouc , Cardinal Rudolph of Austria , in Vienna , the episcopal ordination . Co-consecrators were the Prince-Bishop of Laibach , Augustin Johann Joseph Gruber , and the Vienna Auxiliary Bishop Matthias Paul Steindl . Ziegler moved the bishopric from Tyniec to Tarnów , established a seminary there and had the Tarnów cathedral renovated.
On April 13, 1827 he was appointed Bishop of Linz by the Emperor and confirmed by the Pope on June 25. Ziegler promoted religious branches in his new diocese, had the seminary in Linz built in 1831 and a boys' seminary in 1848 and carried out a popular mission in 1850 . From 1845 his work was hindered by progressive blindness. During this time he was increasingly represented by Franz Seraph Rieder . Ziegler is considered a reform bishop who, like no other bishop of his time, took a stand on religious and ecclesiastical issues.
He published a Latin textbook on dogmatics, numerous sermons, pastoral writings and theological treatises.
Honor
In the parish church and on the house where he was born, memorial plaques remember Kirchheim's important son, who supported his place of birth with donations for the school system, a scholarship for Kirchheim students and the church tower cross.
