Augustin Johann Joseph Gruber (born June 23, 1763 in Vienna ; † June 28, 1835 in Salzburg ) was Archbishop of Salzburg.

Augustin Gruber was born the son of a businessman. He studied in Vienna and entered the Augustinian order in 1780 , which he left in 1782 to enter the general seminary. In 1788 he became a priest in Brunn am Gebirge , in 1794 in Josefstadt in Vienna and in 1796 in St. Anna in Vienna. In 1802 he became church advisor to the state government, in 1806 he became a real councilor and church advisor to the court chancellery. Gruber obtained his doctorate in 1813. theol.

On September 8, 1816, he was ordained Bishop of Laibach by Archbishop Sigismund Anton von Hohenwart of Vienna . On February 16, 1823, he was presented by the emperor as Archbishop of Salzburg . After confirmation by the Pope, Gruber was able to take office on March 25, 1825.

Archbishop Augustin Gruber has u. a. Catechetical lectures held, summarized in the publication Catechetical Lectures on St. Augustine's book: From the instruction of the ignorant in religion ... (Salzburg 1830). In the period between the Enlightenment and Romanticism , when a neo-scholastic, uniform theology was renaissance in theory and practice, he carried out preparatory work that extended to the later “catechetical reform movement”. After his death, Gruber was buried in Salzburg Cathedral.
