Eduard Macheiner

Eduard Macheiner (born August 18, 1907 in Fresen , Styria , † July 17, 1972 in Salzburg ) was Archbishop of Salzburg from 1969 to 1972 .

Eduard Macheiner moved to Seetal near Tamsweg as a toddler , as his parents had bought the “Klauswirt” inn there. He then attended the one-class elementary school in Seetal, and in 1919 he entered the Borromäum in Salzburg. Macheiner was ordained a priest in 1932 and was appointed court chaplain and archiepiscopal secretary to Prince Archbishop Sigismund Waitz in 1935 . From 1939 he was vicar of the cathedral choir. In 1940 he received his doctorate in theology from the University of Vienna . In 1945/46 he lectured on moral theology at the resurrected University of Salzburg . He then worked as a pastor in Bischofshofen until 1949 and then as dean in Tamsweg.

In 1952 he was appointed to the cathedral chapter . In Graz he was invested in the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem in 1953 ; from 1956 to 1966 he was prior for the Salzburg commandery of the grave knight. On March 1, 1963, he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Salzburg and titular bishop of Selja . The Archbishop of Salzburg, Andreas Rohracher , donated his episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were Bishop Joseph Köstner von Gurk and Bishop Josef Schoiswohl von Graz-Seckau . 1967 promoter of the diocesan synod and 1969 chapter vicar . In this capacity he appointed Karl Berg as his vicar general in the same year .

On October 9, 1969, Macheiner was elected Archbishop of Salzburg by the cathedral chapter as the successor to the resigned Archbishop Andreas Rohracher . He dedicated himself with great success to ecumenical construction and the aim of building spiritual bridges between generations and between priests and lay people . After his unexpected passing, Archbishop Macheiner was buried in the crypt of Salzburg Cathedral . Karl Berg was elected as his successor.
