Georg von Kuenburg

Georg von Kuenburg (* 1530 ; † January 25, 1587 ) was an Archbishop of Salzburg and a nephew of Archbishop Michael von Kuenburg .

The origin

His father was the keeper of Moosham , Christoph von Kuenburg . Georg von Kuenburg was regarded as godly, pious, understanding, benevolent, humble and domestic. He had received substantial support from his uncle and predecessor, ordained a priest in 1555 and elected provost in 1579 .

Coadjutor and Archbishop

With the consent of Archbishop Kuen-Belasy (Count Khuen von Belasi), who suffered a stroke in 1579 and was then barely able to govern, he became coadjutor in 1580 . Soon after this election, Georg expressed his unease about the deed of surrender he signed when he was nominated coadjutor, which accorded the cathedral chapter special rights. Years of dispute with this cathedral chapter followed. Georg repeatedly threatened to resign, most recently in 1585.

Georg von Kuenburg also acted rigorously against the Protestants in the city and state of Salzburg , forcing mainly Protestant citizens to emigrate. To support his strict counter-Reformation measures , he called the Franciscans into the country, who were assigned to the old parish church next door as popular preachers. Since then the church has been called the Franciscan Church.

As a coadjutor, Georg was always aware of the factual impossibility of solving all of the country's conflicting political, religious and economic problems.

The 1586 elected Archbishop of Salzburg was only on October 6, 1586, a few months before his death, the consecration as archbishop.
