The Dompropst (Latin praepositus ) is the provost , ie the head of a cathedral chapter . He is the highest dignity and represents the chapter externally.

In some cathedral chapters ( Mainz cathedral chapters ) the office does not exist, the dean is in charge .


The cathedral provost is elected by the cathedral chapter and appointed by the bishop .

Its tasks are set out in the statutes of the respective cathedral chapter. The cathedral provost represents the chapter externally and is often responsible for the administration of the goods. The internal direction of the chapter is usually a cathedral dean .
