Jakob Ernst of Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn
Jakob Ernst Graf von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn (born February 14, 1690 in Hertwigswalde , Duchy of Münsterberg , † June 12, 1747 in Salzburg ) was Bishop of Seckau , Prince-Bishop of Olomouc and Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg .
Life
Jakob Ernst von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn came from the South Tyrolean noble family Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn . His parents were Franz Graf von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn, Imperial Privy Councilor, and Katharina, born. Baron Pavlovska. He studied philosophy and law in Brno and Olomouc . After he had decided on a spiritual career, he received a canonical in Olomouc in 1709 and studied from 1709 to 1712 as an alumne at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome, where he also obtained a theological doctorate. After being ordained a priest in Rome in 1713 , he worked for a few years in the episcopal chancellery in Olomouc and was also archdeacon in Troppau . In 1717, after his brother's resignation, he became canon in Salzburg, where he soon rose to become consistorial president . When his father's rule in Malenovice was divided , the Pohořelice estate was assigned to Jakob Ernst in 1724 . His heir was Karl Otto Graf von Salm und Neuburg .
Bishop of Seckau
On January 17, 1728, Pope Benedict XIII appointed Jakob Ernst von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn as bishop of the Salzburg diocese Graz-Seckau ( own diocese ); he succeeded Leopold Anton von Firmian , who became Archbishop of Salzburg. The episcopal ordination donated to him on March 14, 1728 his predecessor. At the same time he was Salzburg Vicar General for Styria and the Neustädter District.
Bishop of Olomouc
After the death of Olomouc bishop Wolfgang Hannibal von Schrattenbach , the cathedral chapter elected Jakob Ernst von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn as his successor on October 11, 1738. The papal confirmation of the election took place on January 26, 1739.
During his tenure he donated the college in Weißwasser . After the Prussian occupation of Olomouc in 1742, he initiated extensive work on the cathedral and the Prince-Bishop's residence in order to provide work for the craftsmen. On May 12, 1743, he crowned Maria Theresa Queen of Bohemia in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague . The pontifical regalia that he wore during this ceremony is now in the cathedral treasury of the Wenceslas Cathedral in Olomouc.
Prince-Bishop of Salzburg
After the death of Salzburg's Prince-Bishop Leopold Anton von Firmian, the cathedral chapter there elected Jakob Ernst von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn as his successor on January 13, 1745. Because of the archbishopric's over-indebtedness, his short term of office was overshadowed by disputes with the cathedral chapter. After his death he was buried in the crypt of Salzburg Cathedral.
