Maximilian von Hamilton (Czech: Maxmilián z Hamiltonu ; born March 17, 1714 in Munich ; † October 31, 1776 in Kremsier ) was Prince-Bishop of Olomouc .

His parents were Julius Franz von Hamilton, electoral Bavarian court counselor, and Maria Ernestina, nee. from Stahrenberg. His grandfather Jakob von Hamilton, born in England from a Scottish family, received the title of Imperial Count in 1695 and the Moravian Inkolat in 1698 .

Maximilian studied in Ettal and from 1734–1738 at the Roman Sapienza , where he received his doctorate in 1737. iur. utr. received his doctorate. After his ordination in 1738 he was active in pastoral care and was appointed Olomouc Cathedral Capitular in 1747 , Rector of St. Anne's Chapel at Olomouc Cathedral in 1751 and Vicar General in 1758 . After the death of Prince-Bishop Leopold Friedrich von Egkh and Hungersbach , the Olomouc Cathedral Chapter elected him as his successor.

Maximilian completed the diocesan visitation begun under Bishop Ferdinand Julius von Troyer and in 1772 had a list of those places where new parishes were to be established. The directory served as the basis for the negotiations between the Vienna government and the Holy See about a new diocesan division of Moravia, with which the diocesan borders should be adapted to the changed state borders. After most of Silesia fell to Prussia in 1742 , the area of ​​the Archdiocese of Wroclaw in Austrian Silesia was to be incorporated into a new diocese of Opava and a diocese of Brno was to be established from parts of South Moravia . Because of these intentions, the Viennese government obtained a papal breve in 1773 , which forbade the Olomouc cathedral chapter to freely elect after the death of the incumbent bishop and which came into effect three years later after the death of Maximilian, who was buried in the Olomouc cathedral.

He was the founder of the village of Hamiltony .
