Stanislaus Pavlovský von Pavlovitz (Czech: Stanislav Pavlovský z Pavlovic , Polish Stanisław Pawłowski z Pawłowic ; * in Pawlowitz near Hotzenplotz or Pawlowitz near Pless ; †  June 2, 1598 ) was Bishop of Olomouc .

Origin and career

Stanislaus Pavlovský came from a Silesian knight family. His parents were Stanislaus Pavlovský of the same name and Anna (Sophie) Brandis von Grabyschitz ( Brandejs z Hrabošic ). Duke Wenzel von Teschen and the Breslau bishop Balthasar von Promnitz are said to have influenced his spiritual education .

Stanislaus studied at the Olomouc Jesuit College and received the tonsure on March 3, 1567 by Bishop Wilhelm Prusinovský von Víckov . In 1569 he obtained a canonical at the Olomouc Chapter from Emperor Maximilian II . From 1571 to 1574 he studied - together with Johannes Mezon , the later Bishop of Olomouc - as an alumne of the Collegium Germanicum theology and canon law in Rome, where he received his doctorate in 1574. iur. utr. PhD . He had been a canon in Breslau since 1573 . In 1575 he became provost of the St. Peter chapter in Brno , a year later apostolic protonotary and in 1577 scholaster in Olomouc. He was Episcopal Chancellor under the bishops Jan Grodecký von Brod , Thomas Albin von Helfenburg and Johannes Mezoun.

Bishop of Olomouc

After the death of Bishop Johannes Mezoun, a group of the cathedral chapter elected the layman Bernhard von Würben ( Bernard Bruntálský z Vrbna ) on August 25, 1578 , another group, of which Stanislaus Pavlovský belonged, the Prague Archbishop Anton Brus von Müglitz . Nuncio Zaccaria Delfino contradicted both candidacies and demanded a new election. The second election was also unsuccessful, as the chapter again elected two candidates and the imperial court and the estates refused to approve. It was not until June 11, 1579 that Stanislaus Pavlovský, the emperor's preferred candidate, was chosen. The papal confirmation of August 26th of the year was followed by the episcopal ordination by the Viennese bishop Johann Caspar Neubeck on January 6th, 1580 and the enthronement in Olomouc on March 25th, 1580.

During his tenure, Stanislaus Pavlovský pursued the tasks to which he had committed himself in the election surrender . This included the re-Catholicization of Moravia (but also in the Silesian minority Friedek ), the expansion of the spiritual jurisdiction, the supervision of the monasteries, the defense of the immunity of the clergy and the repayment of the diocesan debts.

As the imperial envoy, Stanislaus Pavlovský negotiated several times with Poland. He was supposed to enforce the Habsburg candidacy for the throne and to conclude an alliance against the Turks. Probably in recognition of his services, the emperor renewed the title of prince of the Olomouc bishops, which secured their immediate royal legal status. Through the diplomatic missions Stanislaus Pavlovský got to know the most important officials of the Bohemian crown lands and used the contacts to exert political influence. As early as 1579 he obtained the right of censorship and a printing ban for heretical writings from the emperor. In Troppau and other cities he insisted on the expulsion of Lutheran preachers and the installation of Catholic priests. He was assisted by the Bohemian Chancellor Vratislav von Pernstein , who granted him the right to appoint parish priests on his reigns. Stanislaus also achieved that the state offices in Moravia were only filled with Catholic officials, thus creating the political prerequisites for re-Catholicization. At the diocesan synod of 1591, he announced the resolutions of the Council of Trent .

Stanislaus Pavlovský supported the Jesuit college in Olomouc, which he furnished with former monastery goods in 1590, from his own resources. As early as 1581 he had handed over the former Dominican convent and its goods to the Jesuits.

The Olomouc Cathedral and the episcopal residences in Olomouc and Kremsier were expanded during his tenure.
