Johann Ernst Plateis von Plattenstein (according to the list of bishops of Olomouc: Johannes XIX. Ernst Plateis von Plattenstein; Czech: Jan Arnošt Platejs z Plattenštejna; * 1586 ; † August 21, 1637 ) was Bishop of Olomouc .

Origin and career

Johann Ernst Plateis came from a German-Bohemian family of the lower nobility. His parents were Johann Plateis and Dorothea, geb. from Ottersdorf. In 1585 they were ennobled with the nickname of Plattenstein auf Gußmannsdorf and in 1605 they were knighted. The father was a clerk for the Colonel Chancellor Vratislav von Pernstein and later a court chamber secretary. The family lived in a palace in Prague's old town (the so-called Platteis, also Plateis, Plateys, in Czech Platyz ), where the father died as an imperial partisan during the Bohemian riots under house arrest.

Johann Ernst Plateis studied theology in Rome as an alumne of the Collegium Germanicum and acquired the academic degree of Dr. iur. utr. After graduating, he became a canon of the cathedral chapters of Olomouc , Prague and Wroclaw and of Vyšehrad . He obtained further benefices as archdeacon of Brno and provost of the Olomouc cathedral chapter.

As an avid supporter of the Counter-Reformation , he served the Olomouc Prince-Bishop Franz Xaver von Dietrichstein as vicar general from 1622 to 1636 . In 1624 he was also a reporter for the Reformation Commission appointed by Dietrichstein. In 1628 he took part in the drafting of the Moravian "Renewed Land Order" and in 1629 was a permanent member of the Prague Chapter Assembly.

Emperor Ferdinand II appointed Johann Ernst Plateis imperial court counselor as well as council of the archdukes Leopold and Karl. The Pope gave him the title of papal house prelate .

Bishop of Olomouc

After the death of Bishop Franz Xaver von Dietrichstein, the Olomouc cathedral chapter elected Johann Ernst Plateis von Plattenstein as his successor on November 12, 1636. However, he died before the papal confirmation was received. He determined his fortune to the Augustinian monastery in Olomouc. He was buried in the monastery church.
