Karl Joseph Johann Anton Ignaz Felix von Lothringen (born November 24, 1680 in Vienna , † December 4, 1715 in Vienna) was the son of Duke Karl V of Lorraine and his wife Eleonore Maria Josepha of Austria and Bishop of Olomouc and Osnabrück and Archbishop and Elector of Trier . His brother Franz II. Joseph of Lorraine was prince abbot of the imperial monasteries Stablo-Malmedy and canons in Cologne and Liège .

Life

Since 1687 cathedral pupil ("Domicellar") and later also canon in Cologne , he became canon in Osnabrück in 1691 , in Trento in 1692 , shortly afterwards in Olomouc , 1702 in Trier and 1715 in Liège . At the same time, he was pastor of the Primitive Church in Nancy from 1689, Grand Prior of the Order of Malta in Castile and Leon from 1693 , and before 1694 Commander Abbot of the Benedictine abbey BMV della Magione in the Archdiocese of Palermo , the Abbey of San Stefano in Bologna , the Abbey of BMV de Chiaravalle in the Diocese of Senigallia and since September 13, 1699, the Lisle-en-Barois Abbey.

On September 13, 1694, the cathedral chapter of Olomouc had postulated him as coadjutor of the ruling bishop, for which he received the papal confirmation by Innocent XII on January 20, 1695 . received, which excluded him until he was 25 years old from the temporal administration and until he was 30 years old from the spiritual administration of the diocese, which was to be carried out by papal administrators. The Bishop of Olomouc died on September 23, 1695, and under the conditions that had already been determined, he succeeded him. In fact, he was able to take up the temporal administration on May 11, 1700 and the co-administration of Spiritualia on June 27, 1703.

Although his prospects were slim, he was elected bishop on April 14, 1698 in Osnabrück. The papal confirmation of September 27, 1698 allowed him to keep the diocese of Olomouc , so that he was now bishop of two dioceses.

When his brother tried to enforce the state church in Lorraine from 1701 , the Pope refused to confirm the election as coadjutor of the prince-abbot von Stablo in 1701 and also in 1706 in Munster the votes that had fallen on him in the bishopric election. Although there was no reconciliation between Lorraine and the Pope, he obtained an eligibility certificate for the elections in Trier in 1710 . He did not need to be postulated, but was elected coadjutor archbishop of Trier on September 24, 1710. With the death of the local archbishop on January 6th, 1711, he also took over the government and received confirmation from the Pope without objection. For this, however, he had to give up the diocese of Olomouc.

If he only made the necessary mandatory stays in Olomouc, Lorraine carried out an elaborate court keeping in the Osnabrück City Palace. He also stayed for a long time in his brother's residence, Lunéville . When he took over the government in Trier in 1711, he commuted back and forth between Trier , Lunéville, Vienna and Osnabrück.

The responsible and capable administrator kept a court of over 100 people and tried to regain the entire rule within his dioceses, which were partly controlled by the occupying forces due to the warfare. Ordained as a subdeacon before 1703 , he moved his residence mainly to Ehrenbreitstein from 1713 and died of smallpox two years later in Vienna .
