Ernst August II of Hanover
Ernst August II of Hanover, Duke of York and Albany, Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück , KG (born September 17, 1674 in Osnabrück ; † August 14, 1728 there ) was a prince from the House of Hanover .
Life
Ernst August was the youngest son of Ernst August von Hannover , Elector of Braunschweig-Lüneburg and Sophie von der Pfalz . He was a younger brother of King George I of Great Britain , Elector of Hanover.
On July 3, 1716 he was made Knight of the Garter and two days later Duke of York and Albany and Earl of Ulster . In contrast to his four older brothers, he had never opposed the transition from the division of the estate to the primogeniture decided by his father in 1684 and therefore maintained a good relationship with his oldest brother.
Ernst August was the ruling Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück from 1716 to 1728 . In Hilter in the Teutoburg Forest , he promoted hard coal mining.
Ernst August remained unmarried. His correspondence with Johann Franz von Wendt (1678–1740), the father of Amalie Sophie von Wallmoden , was interpreted as evidence of a homosexual relationship.
Ernst August died a year after his royal brother, like this one in Osnabrück Castle, and was also buried in the chapel of the Leineschloss in Hanover. The sarcophagus was after the Second World War in the Welfenmausoleum in mountain garden in Herrenhausen transferred, along with his brother George I and those of the parents.
