Anna Eleonore von Hessen-Darmstadt, Duchess of Braunschweig

Anna Eleonore von Hessen-Darmstadt (born July 30, 1601 in Darmstadt ; † May 6, 1659 in Schloss Herzberg ) was the duchess and regent of Braunschweig-Lüneburg .

Life

Anna Eleonore was a daughter of Landgrave Ludwig V of Hesse-Darmstadt (1577–1626) from his marriage to Magdalena (1582–1616), daughter of Elector Johann Georg von Brandenburg .

She married the future Duke Georg of Braunschweig and Lüneburg on December 14, 1617 in Darmstadt . The wedding, at which a large number of princes in Darmstadt were present, was celebrated very elaborately. The marriage to Anna Eleonore had a great influence on Georg's policy in the Hessian War of Darmstadt and Kassel around Hessen-Marburg . Georg knew how to use his father-in-law's good relations with the imperial family for himself. Anna Eleonore conducts extensive correspondence with her father on political issues.

In his will, the Duke designated his wife Anna Eleonore, alongside his brother and brother-in-law , as guardian of their sons. The widow, devoted to her father's house, immediately gave her brother Johann supreme command of the Braunschweig-Lüneburg troops.

Anna Eleonore lived until her death on her widow's residence, Schloss Herzberg , where all of her children were born. It is therefore considered the cradle of the English royal family .

Anna Eleonore was buried in the princely crypt in the town church of St. Mary in Celle.
