Sophie Amalie of Braunschweig-Calenberg
Sophie Amalie von Braunschweig-Calenberg (* March 24, 1628 at Herzberg Castle ; † February 20, 1685 in Copenhagen ) was a princess from the House of Welfs and, by marriage, Queen of Denmark and Norway.
Life
Sophie Amalie was the only daughter of Duke Georg von Braunschweig and Lüneburg-Calenberg (1582–1641) and his wife Princess Anna Eleonore von Hessen-Darmstadt .
On October 1, 1643 she married Friedrich III. of Denmark and Norway (1609–1670), third son of King Christian IV of Denmark and his first wife Anna Katharina of Brandenburg . Eight children emerged from their marriage:
- Christian V (1646–1699) ∞ Princess Charlotte Amalie of Hessen-Kassel
- Anna Sophie (1647–1717) ∞ Elector Johann Georg III. of Saxony
- Friederike Amalie (1649–1704) ∞ Duke Christian Albrecht of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf
- Wilhelmine Ernestine (1650–1706) ∞ Elector Karl II of the Palatinate
- Friedrich (1651-1652)
- George, Duke of Cumberland (1653–1708) ∞ Queen Anne of Great Britain
- Ulrike Eleonore (1656–1693) ∞ King Karl XI. of Sweden
- Dorothea (1657-1658)
Sophie Amalie influenced political decisions during the reign of her husband and later her son. She played an active role in the power struggle with Corfitz Ulfeldt and his wife Leonora Christina , a daughter of Kirsten Munk . She also played a part in the establishment of absolute monarchy in Denmark, which took place from 1658 to 1660 after the siege of Copenhagen by the Swedes. Despite the precarious financial situation in the country, she was responsible for a lavish court life.
She spent her widow years at her Amalienborg summer residence , which was built for her between 1669 and 1673.
