Anna Katharina von Brandenburg (born July 26, 1575 in Halle , † March 29, 1612 in Copenhagen ) was a princess of Brandenburg and, by marriage, queen of Denmark and Norway.

Life

Anna Katharina was the eldest daughter of Elector Joachim Friedrich von Brandenburg (1546–1608) from his first marriage to Katharina (1549–1602), daughter of Margrave Johann von Brandenburg-Küstrin (1513–1571). The princess was not dissimilar to her mother, described as average in education and appearance.

After a life-threatening crossing over the Baltic Sea , the Kurbrandenburg family took part in the coronation celebrations of King Christian IV of Denmark (1577–1648) on August 29, 1596. It was here that Anna Katharina met her future husband. Christian sent a delegation to Wolmirstedt Palace , where Anna Katharina's father resided at that time as administrator of the Archdiocese of Magdeburg , and asked for the princess's hand. The wedding took place on November 27, 1597 in Hadersleben and on July 12 of the following year Anna Katharina was crowned Queen of Denmark in the Frauenkirche in Copenhagen .

During the marriage, Christian had an extramarital relationship with the daughter of the Copenhagen mayor, Kirsten Matsdatter. The future Danish marshal Jørgen Urne (1598–1642) began his career as a noble boy of Queen Anna Katharina.

Anna Katharina is buried in Roskilde Cathedral.
