Magdalena Sibylla of Saxony
Princess Magdalena Sibylla of Saxony (born December 23, 1617 in Dresden , † January 6, 1668 in Altenburg ) was Crown Princess of Denmark and Norway and later Duchess of Saxony-Altenburg by marriage .
Life
Magdalena Sibylla was the daughter of Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony from the House of Wettin ( Albertine line) and his second wife, Princess Magdalena Sibylle of Prussia .
In 1634, Princess Magdalena Sibylla married the Danish Hereditary Prince Christian of Denmark and Norway in Copenhagen . The wedding was celebrated pompously in the middle of the Thirty Years War . Crown Prince Christian died in 1647 after thirteen years of marriage on a visit to Dresden, without having taken the throne. The marriage remained childless.
In 1652 she was married to Duke Friedrich Wilhelm II of Saxony-Altenburg in her second marriage . From this marriage there were three children:
- Christian (1654–1663), Hereditary Prince of Saxony-Altenburg
- Johanna Magdalena (1656–1686) ⚭ Johann Adolf I, Duke of Saxony-Weißenfels (1649–1697)
- Friedrich Wilhelm III. (1657–1672), last representative of the House of Saxony-Altenburg
Her grave is in the princely crypt of the castle church in Altenburg . The Magdalenenstift originally planned as a widow's residence was only completed after her death.
Magdalena Sibylla was the holder of the order of the slave women of virtue .
