Wolfsbrunn Castle was built in 1911 as a villa and park belonging to the wealthy mining entrepreneur Karl Georg Wolf. The property is located in the Hartenstein district of Stein in the south of the Zwickau district in Saxony . It has been owned by the Leonhardt brothers ( Leonhardt Group ) since 1997 and is run as a representative hotel building, since 2010 under the name of Gästehaus Wolfsbrunn .
history
The building was erected between 1911 and 1913 in the Poppenwald opposite Stein Castle and near the Zwickauer Mulde river as the private residence of the mining entrepreneur and main shareholder of the Lugau-Oelsnitz coal district Dr. Karl Georg Wolf (1863-1934). The designs come from the Munich architect Emanuel von Seidl , who also created other comparable, castle-like industrial residences. The architecture can be classified in the contemporary currents of reform architecture and Heimatschutz style and shows echoes of the southern German baroque . The interior, some of which is still in its original state, was done by well-known Munich artists.
In 1934 the owner Wolf died and the property became municipal property. In the era of National Socialism , the facility served as Youth , Reich leaders School , Officer hospital and quarters of a rod of the German Wehrmacht .
After the Second World War , resettlers were initially assigned to the premises until the building was used as a district youth school for the FDJ after the GDR was founded. Later, pioneer leaders were trained here , who were also trained as lower school teachers through additional lessons in pedagogy.
After the fall of the Wall , the system remained unused for a few years. In 1997 the brothers Uwe , Helge and Karl-Ludwig Leonhardt bought the property from the city of Hartenstein as Gebrüder Leonhardt GbR . With an investment of 10 million DM , they had it expanded as a hotel with a nature park , and since then it has also served as a model park for the Free State of Saxony. On March 1, 1999, it opened as the Wolfsbrunn Castle Hotel . Initially, the hotel had two restaurant areas, a gourmet restaurant with 14 Gault Millau points and the Georg Wolf restaurant .
At the beginning of the 21st century, the facility was rebuilt again. After the operator was dismissed, the castle has been operating as a guest house with a high standard since 2010. 30 people are employed, including up to five trainees.
estate
The stately home with an L-shaped floor plan is surrounded by a 6 hectare park. There are several well-manicured lawns and a square fountain with turtles as gargoyles . An octagonal fountain made of red sandstone , which vaults the figure of a seated wolf with four columns and a dome made of massive tracery , symbolizes the name of the property. The Wolfsbrunnen is located at the approach to the courtyard. The basement of the building is partially covered with natural stone slabs made of red sandstone, window reveals and bay windows are also decorated with this building material. A cartridge above the main entrance announces:
In the master bedroom hanging Ludwig von Herterichs painted portraits of famous figures such as Goethe , Mozart , Beethoven or Wagner . In the Blue Salon, Julius Diez painted the ceiling painting with the goddess Diana , surrounded by the twelve signs of the zodiac.
Equipment and use
The hotel has three suites , 19 double rooms and two single rooms, which contain some furniture from the construction period. Technical systems and sanitary equipment have also been added. After the renovation work in 2010, the gourmet restaurant appeared under the name "Pavillon". Up until May 2009, the Dresden master chef Henry Kreher created a cuisine based on the region, which was awarded three diamonds in the Varta restaurant guide . Today (2020) it operates under the name Restaurant Artichoke with also fine cuisine, which works mainly with regional products. Some rooms were designed with conference technology as meeting rooms for 6 to 50 people. There is also a bar, a fitness and wellness as well as in areas of the outdoor facilities a tennis court . The hoteliers also organize weddings and summer parties with music and costume groups performing.
