The district of Zwickau is a district in the west of Saxony . It was created on August 1, 2008 through the merger of the districts of Chemnitzer Land , Zwickauer Land and the independent city of Zwickau . It is the smallest district in terms of area in the Free State and has the highest population density of all districts in the new federal states .
geography
The majority of the Zwickau district is part of the Erzgebirge foothills, only a smaller part in the southwest is part of the Vogtland . Neighboring districts are the Thuringian district of Greiz in the west, the also Thuringian district of Altenburger Land in the north, the district of central Saxony in the northeast, the independent city of Chemnitz in the east, the Erzgebirgskreis in the south and southeast and the Vogtlandkreis in the southwest .
history
As part of the Saxon administrative and functional reform of 2008, which came into force on August 1, 2008, the districts of Chemnitzer Land , Zwickauer Land and the independent city of Zwickau were merged into one great district. The largest city of Zwickau was designated as the seat of the district, with branches remaining in the previous (large) district towns - namely Crimmitschau , Glauchau , Hohenstein-Ernstthal , Limbach-Oberfrohna and Werdau .
The district is part of the Vogtland-Zwickau cultural area that was newly created as part of the administrative reform.

economy
In the Future Atlas 2016 , the district of Zwickau was ranked 287 out of 402 districts, municipal associations and independent cities in Germany, making it one of the regions with a “balanced risk-opportunity mix”.
economic sectors
The predominant areas in the Zwickau district are the automotive industry and the automotive supplier industry, as well as logistics, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. There are also a large number of small to medium-sized craft businesses.
labour market
In the area of the district of Zwickau, an average of more than 160,000 employed persons were registered in 2009, which means that the district has the highest number of employed of all districts in the Free State of Saxony. In February 2012, 16,413 people were unemployed. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 9.4% (February 2011: 11.1%). This means that the district of Zwickau has the lowest unemployment of all of Saxony's rural and urban districts.
Youth unemployment
In April 2012, 1,324 under 25-year-olds, 50 fewer young people than in March 2012, were registered as unemployed.

Road traffic
The main traffic arteries in the district are the federal highways 4 and 72 as well as the federal highways 93 , 173 , 175 and 180 .
railroad
The Dresden – Werdau railway line , an important section of the Saxony-Franconian Magistrale, runs through the district with stops and the like. a. in Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Glauchau, Zwickau and Werdau. Furthermore, the S-Bahn has been connecting Central Germany with Leipzig and Leipzig / Halle Airport since December 2013 .

There are seven hospitals, one special care hospital, five standard care hospitals and one specialist hospital in the Zwickau district .

In addition to the diploma course in Sign Language Interpreting, the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau also offers two Bachelor courses in “Health Management” and “Nursing Management” as well as the Master’s course in Health Sciences. The Eubios Academy in Werdau is a state-recognized training facility for health professions.
The British pharmaceutical company Aesica has a production and research center at its Zwickau location.
education
The largest educational institution in the district is the West Saxon University of Zwickau . At the University of Applied Sciences, which emerged from the Zwickau Mountain School , which was founded in 1862, around 5200 students are currently enrolled. In addition, there is a study academy ( BA-Glauchau ) as well as 9 vocational school centers and several high schools in the district. The Zwickau district has a total of 124 general education schools and 201 day-care centers.

The logo of the new district represents a young, blossoming bud as a symbol for the merging of the two former districts. The fresh blue stands as the background color for a strong economy.

District Administrator
The district administrator was elected in the course of the Saxon local elections on June 8, 2008 and thus before the actual district was founded. District administrator was Christoph Scheurer (CDU), who received 52.7% of the vote in the first ballot. Scheurer was already active as a district administrator in the former Glauchau district and in its successor district of Chemnitzer Land . In the district elections on June 7, 2015, he was confirmed in his office with 60.8% in the first ballot.

On September 30, 2009 the district council decided on the new district coat of arms. The coat of arms is supposed to represent a combination of the coats of arms of the former county Schönburg and the Pleißener rule , both of which were in the area of the current district.

partnership
- The partnership concluded on October 3, 1990 between the district of Lörrach and the district of Glauchau was transferred to the district of Zwickau with the district reform in 2008 .
License Plate
On August 1, 2008, the district was assigned the distinctive sign Z, which had been valid since January 1, 1991 for the then district and the then independent city of Zwickau . Since November 9, 2012, due to the license plate liberalization, the distinguishing marks GC (Glauchau), HOT (Hohenstein-Ernstthal) and WDA (Werdau) have been available.
