history

In 1984 the auditor and lawyer Bernard gr. Broermann founded Asklepios with Lutz Mario Helmig . In the course of a spin-off of the shares from Helmig, Helios Kliniken GmbH emerged from the Asklepios-Kliniken Group in 1994 .

The Asklepios clinics are named after the Greek god of healing Asclepius . The Asklepios-Kliniken-Gruppe has grown continuously since it was founded in 1985 and has taken over several formerly municipal facilities

In 2011, Asklepios took over a majority stake of 52.37 percent in MediClin AG , based in Offenburg.

In March 2013, the Federal Cartel Office approved Asklepios' stake in Rhön-Klinikum AG, subject to certain conditions. Asklepios wants to increase its stake from the current 5 to 10.1 percent of the Rhön shares and had registered its project with the cartel office in August 2012. The planned increase in the stake in Rhön enables Asklepios to obtain a right of veto and a takeover of Rhön by another competitor could thus be permanently blocked. In accordance with the requirements, Asklepios must first part with a clinic and a medical care center (MVZ) in the Goslar area.

The luxury hotels Falkenstein Grand and Villa Rothschild also belong to the group . At the end of 2014 it became known that the clinic group had also acquired the Hamburg Hotel Atlantic .

criticism

The group is accused that under its profit orientation u. a. Patient data protection and quality of care are neglected. In 2016, Der Spiegel dedicated an extensive investigative cover story to Asklepios. A former chief physician published the critical book Die Krankenhausverdiener in April 2016 .

According to research by the ARD magazine Kontraste, Asklepios closed the children's ward in Parchim in 2019, which the group is obliged to operate according to the hospital plan, under false pretenses. Previously, the group had temporarily not operated the station with a staffing that complied with the legal requirements, which in one case may have contributed to the death of a patient.
