The Asklepios Specialist Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy Göttingen is the former Lower Saxony State Hospital Göttingen and has been part of the Asklepios Clinics Group, a Hamburg clinic operator, since November 1, 2007 . In 1866 the hospital for mentally ill patients was put into operation as the Royal State Insane Asylum in Göttingen . It was not until 1954 that the Göttingen University Clinic and what was then the Lower Saxony State Hospital (LKH) were separated. The clinic is the academic teaching hospital of the Georg August University .

On November 1, 2007, the Asklepios Clinic Group took over the hospital and the Tiefenbrunn regional hospital . Privatization met with considerable resistance.
