The Villa Rothschild is a property and today's luxury hotel in Königstein im Taunus , which served as the meeting place for the Prime Minister's Conference from 1948 to 1949 to resolve disputed questions of the Parliamentary Council .
history
In 1887 the Rothschilds commissioned the French Amand Louis Bauqué and the Italian Emilio Pio to design the villa in Königstein. The model of the building was erected in the Rothschild Palais in Frankfurt in January 1888. On April 12, 1888, the Königstein municipal council discussed the building project and approved the building. Construction work began that same year. The new summer residence of Wilhelm Carl von Rothschild was used from then on to receive high-ranking nobles and business people. The opening of the house was a social event that included Empress Victoria and the Prince of Wales , among others . In 1938 the Rothschild family fled from the Nazis to Switzerland . The building was confiscated by the Reich Finance Administration , resold in 1939 and used by the Reichsgruppe Banken of the National Socialist regime .
The villa was not damaged in World War II . The state of Hesse took over the building; it was used from 1948 to 1949 as a conference center by committees of the United Economic Area and the West German Prime Ministers. During this time it was also called the House of the States and was considered the "cradle of the German constitution and the Federal Republic ". In this villa, the CDU and CSU discussed their joint work as a parliamentary group in the German Bundestag .
Todays use
In 1955, the city of Königstein im Taunus bought the villa from the Rothschild family, to whom it has since been returned, and converted it into a hotel, which opened in 1956 under the name Hotel Sonnenhof . As neither the city of Königstein nor the previous tenants were able to raise enough funds to carry out an urgently needed thorough renovation, the hotel was temporarily suspended on October 31, 2005. On November 1, 2005, Dr. Broermann Hotels & Residences GmbH signed a 99-year long lease with the city of Königstein im Taunus as the owner of the property. After extensive renovation and demolition of a bed wing, the hotel was reopened on March 1, 2007 as the Villa Rothschild Hotel & Restaurant .
In the hotel there is the restaurant Villa Rothschild by the chef Christian Eckhardt . In April 2017, Sebastian Prüßmann took over the position of head chef at Villa Rothschild. In November 2017 (after a seven-month renovation phase) the restaurant was reopened with a new "Grill & Health" concept and design. The restaurant now operates under the name Restaurant Villa Rothschild Grill & Health.
The wellness area is located in the sister hotel, the Falkenstein Grand, one kilometer away . In November 2009, Kempinski AG took over management of the hotel.
The Villa Rothschild and the Falkenstein Grand have been part of the Autograph Collection from Marriott International since 2020 .
park
A park of 10.4 hectares extends around the villa. In the course of time, the Rothschild family had acquired extensive areas around the villa in order to have an unobstructed view of Königstein Castle , but also of the city of Frankfurt am Main . A park was created, which was structured by old trees, an artificial watercourse and open spaces. In 1975 the sculpture "Radiant Life" by the French-Hungarian sculptor László Szabó was installed.
