The Semmelweis University ( Hungarian : Semmelweis Egyetem ; Latin : Universitas Budapestiensis de Semmelweis Nominata ) is a public university for medical subjects and sports in Budapest , Hungary . The university was named after the Budapest doctor Ignaz Semmelweis .

history

Founded in 1635 by Péter Pázmány as the University of Theology and Law in Nagyszombat , it opened a medical faculty in 1769. By order of Maria Theresa the university was moved to Buda in 1777 and a few years later it was relocated to Pest on the other side of the Danube . It has been a national university since 1848. The Hygiene Institute was the second of its kind in Europe. In 1951 the medical faculty was separated from the University of Budapest and a few years later it was enriched with a dental and pharmaceutical faculty. Since 1969, the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the faculty, the university has been named after the former professor Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis , the discoverer of puerperal fever.

Since 2000, the Semmelweis University for Medical Sciences ( Hungarian Semmelweis Orvostudományi Egyetem , SOTE) has been merged with two other universities to form Semmelweis University (Hungarian Semmelweis Egyetem , SE) and since then has also had faculties for sports and sports science as well as health care .

Medicine has been taught in German since 1983, dentistry since 1987, pharmacy since 2011 , and since 1989 all three classical faculties have also offered classes in English .

Teaching

In the academic year 2017/18, around 6,200 students studied at the three classic faculties of medicine , dentistry and pharmacy , who are taught by 1,700 teachers. Of the approximately 6,200 students, approximately 2,900 are from abroad, including 1,143 from Germany. Around 150 to 250 German students are enrolled in each of the two pre-clinical academic years. At the end of these two years, 90% of German students switch back to Germany to finish their medical studies there. The remaining 10% study for a further four years until they receive their medical diploma in Hungary, which is fully recognized in Germany.

The program director of the German-language course has been Attila Mócsai since 2014.

Clinics

In the connected hospitals (2,769 hospital beds) can each year about 120,000 patients stationary and 2.1 million patients on an outpatient basis are supplied. Half of the population of Hungary belong to the catchment area .

Preparation year

Due to the large number of applications, Semmelweis University offers a preparatory year in cooperation with "College International", which increases the chances of admission to the medically oriented courses of study at Hungarian universities if the results are good. This gives the student basic scientific knowledge in the subjects of chemistry, physics, biology and the Hungarian language in 2 semesters.

The preparatory year, which is carried out at MC Daniells College, is particularly useful for students who had problems or little instruction in chemistry, physics, mathematics and biology in upper secondary school. It makes studying at the university, which is strongly influenced by natural sciences, easier.

In 2006, due to the increasing number of German medical students in Budapest, the "German Student Union Semmelweis" (DSVS for short) was founded. The DSVS represents the interests of German-speaking students towards the university. In addition to academic matters, the DSVS is also actively involved in leisure activities. Your primary goal is to make German-language medical studies in Budapest more friendly for students. It is divided into several areas of competence (academic (preclinical and clinical), non-academic, dental, pharmaceutical, finance, webmaster, and culture and leisure). The DSVS currently consists of 40 representatives from all six years who are active in the aforementioned areas of competence under the chairmanship of Fabian Dehne.

Asklepios Campus Hamburg

In September 2008 the Medical Faculty of Semmelweis University opened an external campus in Hamburg under the name Asklepios Campus Hamburg in cooperation with the Asklepios Group . Semmelweis University students can complete the clinical semesters of their medical studies there according to the Hungarian curriculum in German. The operator is Asklepios Medical School GmbH. The campus is located on the premises of the Asklepios Klinik St. Georg. It provides places for up to 65 students per year. The hospitals of the Asklepios Kliniken Hamburg as well as various cooperating practices and institutes in the Hamburg area take on the practical part of the training .
