West Hungarian University in Sopron

The West Hungarian University ( Hungarian : Nyugat-Magyarországi Egyetem ) short NYME - is a state university with a main campus in the western Hungarian city of Sopron and further locations in Győr , Mosonmagyaróvár and Székesfehérvár .

The predecessor institution of the West Hungarian University is the one established in 1735 by Emperor Karl VI. (in office as King Charles III of Hungary ) in Selmecbánya (Schemnitz) (today Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia ) founded mining school . In addition to mining, forestry was one of the teaching areas of the institution from an early age. In the 1760s, subjects like math and chemistry were added, and the mining school was upgraded to the Royal Mining Academy. When the language of instruction was to be changed from German to Hungarian in the middle of the 19th century (which was not implemented), many students and teachers moved to the newly founded Steiermärkisch-Ständische Montanlehranstalt in Leoben. With the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918, the mining academy was relocated to Sopron. In 1934 the Mining Academy was incorporated into the newly founded Palatine Josef University of Technology and Economics in Budapest as the Faculty of Mining, Metallurgy and Forestry .

After the end of the Second World War , the Mining and Metallurgy Faculties were relocated to Miskolc , where, together with the newly established Faculty of Mechanical Engineering , they formed the new Miskolc University , which therefore also follows the tradition of the mining school founded in 1735. The forestry faculty resumed its operations in Sopron in 1952, but after the failed Hungarian uprising in 1956, many teachers and students emigrated to western countries. In 1962, the Forestry Faculty became part of the newly founded University of Forest and Wood Sciences in Sopron , which was renamed the University of Sopron in 1996 and the West Hungarian University in 2000, after several small universities had been incorporated .
