Fontaine des Innocents
The Fontaine des Innocents (German: Fountain of the Innocents) is a fountain on the Square des Innocents in the 1st arrondissement in Paris .
The fountain was built by Pierre Lescot in the Renaissance style between 1547 and 1549 and decorated with sculptures by Jean Goujon . It was named after the neighboring Saints Innocents church, which was demolished in 1786 . After the church was demolished, the fourth side of the fountain was rebuilt, which Augustin Pajou decorated in 1788.
The church and the fountain were surrounded by the Cimetière des Innocents, which was laid out in the Middle Ages and where around two million people were buried. The bones were relocated between 1780 and 1788 for health reasons.
The Square des Innocents was laid out in 1858 and the location of the fountain was relocated. Today it is a pedestrian zone and a lively meeting place. Rue Saint-Denis runs through its eastern side .
