The 1st arrondissement of Paris , the Arrondissement du Louvre , is one of the oldest districts of Paris . One of its four districts, the Quartier des Halles , has its origins in the early Middle Ages .
Geographical location
The 1st arrondissement borders the 7th and 6th in the south, the 8th in the west, the 2nd in the north and the 3rd and 4th arrondissement in the east . The first is mainly on the right bank of the Seine , but also includes the western part of the Île de la Cité . With an area of 183 hectares, it is the fourth smallest arrondissement in Paris.
Demographic data
According to the 1999 census, 16,888 inhabitants were registered in the 1st arrondissement. This corresponds to a population density of 9228 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Mayor has been Jean-François Legaret (born June 21, 1952), the first vice-president of the right-wing liberal party UMP , since April 2, 2001 . Legaret was first elected to the Paris City Council on March 12, 1989 and re-elected on June 11, 1995 and March 18, 2001.
