Marengo (Alessandria)

Marengo (German outdated: Mähringen ) is a district of the city of Alessandria in the Italian province of Alessandria in the triangle Turin - Genoa - Milan . The place is 5 km southeast of Alessandria on the road to Novi Ligure in a swampy area, on the river Bormida . It had 1881 2127 inhabitants, in 2011 there were 7254.

Marengo became famous for the Battle of Marengo , when on June 14th, 1800 the French under Bonaparte won a victory over the Austrians under Melas .

Napoleon Bonaparte later named his horse after the place of the battle. The chicken marengo also has its origin here.
