history
Alessandria was founded in 1168 by the residents of the area to defend themselves against the Marquis of Montferrat and the city of Pavia , at whose request it was unsuccessfully besieged in 1174 by Frederick Barbarossa for six months. The Lombard League took up the place and named it Alessandria, after Pope Alexander III. After the Peace of Constance in 1183, the city was formally re-established and was given the name Cesaria (Imperial City).
After the city passed through different hands, it was awarded to the House of Savoy in the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 , and the construction of a fortress was started by Ignazio Bertola in 1728 . During the French occupation (1800–1814) that began after the Battle of Marengo , it was fortified even further. The facilities were completely destroyed by the Austrians in 1815, but were then rebuilt.
The fortress is on the left side of the Tanaro and was still used by the military until 2007.
Alessandria has been a bishopric since 1175 .
