The Belbo (Piedmontese Berb or Belb ) is an 86 km long river in southern Piedmont (northwestern Italy). It is a right-hand tributary of the Tanaro , the largest northern river in the Ligurian Alps . Its sources are located at around 800 m above sea level in the mountains of Montezemolo in the border area of Liguria and Piedmont, its catchment area covers around 516 km², mostly in the Langhe plateau. Its mean water flow is 6 m³ per second.
On its course, the Belbo crosses the three Piedmontese provinces of Cuneo, Asti and Alessandria. Like its eastern parallel river, the Bormida , it flows into the Tanaro at Villa del Foro a few km west of the city of Alessandria , which in turn joins the Po after about 15 km .
The gentle hill country northwest of the river is called Bassa Langa (low Langa) and is known for its viticulture . The higher hill country southeast of the Belbo is called Alta Langa .
