history
In April 402, the battle of Pollentia between troops of the Roman Empire and Visigoths under Alaric I took place on the left bank of the river . It went out in favor of the Romans, but that ultimately could not stop the Visigoths. In Pollenzo you can still find remains of ancient Pollentia.
The former French department Tanaro (1797-1815) with its seat in Asti was named after the river.
In November 1994, after heavy rains, the Tanaro Valley experienced one of the worst floods in its history, which particularly affected the city of Alessandria.
