Pollenzo ( Poland in Piedmontese ) is a village in Piedmont and a district of Bra in the province of Cuneo . It is four kilometers east of Bra and 13 km west of Alba am Tanaro near the mouth of the Stura di Demonte .

history

Ancient Pollentia was in the Ligure Bagienni landscape on the southern section of the Via Vulvia , between Appenninus and the upper reaches of the Padus . A pre-Roman settlement already suspected by Pliny (Nat.Hist., III, 5, 49) has not yet been archaeologically proven. The city was founded around 125 BC. BC to 123 BC During the campaigns of Filvius . For the Romans, the city, once with a very large amphitheater , played an important strategic role in the transit area between the Po Valley , the Alpine passes and the Ligurian coast. It was located together with the neighboring centers of Alba Pompeia and Augusta Bagiennorum (near Bene Vagienna ) at the intersection of different routes that were built in the 2nd century BC. Were of fundamental importance for the advancing occupation of the area by the Romans. The city was famous for its wool and ceramic production. During the Mutinensian War , Pollentia seized in 43 BC. Stilicho went on Easter (April 6th) 402 there in a battle victorious against Alaric I ( Battle of Pollentia ).

In 938 the Tanaro Valley was devastated by the Saracens . From 1218 to 1242 Pollenzo fell to the free municipality of Alba, which had to cede it to Montferrat in 1283 . In 1530 it came to Savoy .

From 1832 onwards, King Carlo built Alberto Pollenzo into an agricultural property and his country residence. The last Italian king, Victor Emmanuel III. after his abdication in 1946 assumed the title of Count von Pollenzo .

Attractions

The archaeological sites with the remains of ancient Pollentia can be found near Pollenzo. The most important testimonies are the rectangular city layout, the necropolis , an aqueduct , walls, theater, temple, forum and numerous inscriptions . Today's village is built into the ancient amphitheater, which can still be seen clearly in the unusual oval village complex.

To the north-west of the village center lies the Albertina , the country estate from the 19th century, which was built in neo-Gothic forms. This includes the Church of San Vittore in the same style. In the second courtyard of the Albertine complex, the Agenzia , the Università di Scienze Gastronomiche , run by Slow Food , is now housed.

Carlo Alberto built the medieval castle for celebrations. It is privately owned and cannot be viewed.
