Asti ( Piedmontese Ast ) is a city in northwest Italy with 75,528 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the Piedmont region and is the administrative center of the Asti province .
history
Asti was born in 89 BC. Founded as a Roman colony with the name Hasta . Asti became the seat of a bishopric in the 5th century, making it the most important city in Piedmont . In the 16th century Asti fell to the House of Savoy . The republic was proclaimed in 1797 and Asti later became the capital of the Tanaro department under French rule.

Viticulture
Asti and the area around the city is approved for the grape varieties Barbera , Dolcetto , Freisa , Grignolino , Malvasia and Moscato . Many different, well-known red wines are produced , such as B. Barbera d'Asti , Dolcetto d'Asti , Freisa d'Asti and Grignolino d'Asti as well as the sparkling wines Asti Spumante or the Moscato d'Asti . The wines mentioned all have a controlled designation of origin ( DOC or DOCG ). In 2014, 712,306 hectoliters of wine were produced in the Asti wine-growing region on an area of 9,045 hectares .
The Italian oenologist Federico Martinotti, director of l'Istituto Sperimentale per l'Enologia di Asti, invented a new technology for making sparkling wines at the end of the 19th century, later known as Méthode Charmat .

Asti has a very active triangular partnership with the German city of Biberach an der Riß and the French city of Valence . There is also a friendship with Clacton-on-Sea .
