Barbera d'Asti

Barbera d'Asti is an Italian red wine from 168 municipalities in the provinces of Alessandria (50 municipalities there) and Asti (118 municipalities), Piedmont . The wine has had DOCG status since July 8, 2008 , which was updated on October 8, 2010. 2225 vintners, mostly part-time, shared the vineyards in 2017 and produced 212,667 hl of Barbera d'Asti.

The wine is at least 90% of the grape variety ' Barbera vinified'. Other red grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Piedmont region may be processed up to a maximum of 10%. Barbera d'Asti must mature for at least four months, and storage in wooden barrels is not required. A maturation period of at least 14 months (of which at least 6 months in wooden barrels) is required for Barbera d'Asti Superiore . Subzones with the names Colli Astiani , Nice and Tinella have been created for wines that are allowed to bear the Superiore quality seal due to a somewhat longer storage period and a higher alcohol content .
