Erbaluce di Caluso

Erbaluce di Caluso or simply Caluso is an Italian white wine with DOCG status (updated on March 7, 2014).

The area that extends to the municipalities of Caluso , Agliè , Azeglio , Bairo , Barone Canavese , Bollengo , Borgomasino , Burolo , Candia Canavese , Caravino , Cossano Canavese , Cuceglio , Ivrea , Maglione , Mazzè , Mercenasco , Montalenghe , Orio Canavese , Romano Canavese , Palazzo Canavese , Parella , Perosa Canavese , Piverone , Scarmagno , Settimo Rottaro , San Giorgio Canavese , San Martino Canavese , Strambino , Vestignè , Vialfrè , Villareggia , Vische (all metropolitan city of Turin ), Moncrivello ( province of Vercelli ), Roppolo , Viverone and Zimone ( Province of Biella ), has had the status of a Denominazione di origine controllata since July 9, 1967 .

There is also a dessert wine called Erbaluce di Caluso Passito or Caluso Passito . In order to obtain the concentration necessary for its production, the grapes are dried for approx. 5 months ( straw wine ). To do this, this is either spread out on straw mats or hung on threads in well-ventilated attics. This wine has an alcohol content of at least 17% by volume. The sparkling wine Erbaluce di Caluso Spumante or Caluso Spumante is very rare .

In 2016, 9,493 hectoliters of wine were produced on 196 hectares of vineyards . Of this, 9,143 hl Erbaluce di Caluso, 201 hl Caluso Passito and 149 hl Caluso Spumante.

Production regulations

All wines must be made from 100% Erbaluce grapes . A minimum maturation period is required for the Caluso passito (3 years) and the Caluso passito riserva (4 years).

    • Color : golden yellow to dark yellow
    • Smell : delicate, characteristic
    • Taste : sweet, harmonious, full, velvety
    • Alcohol content at least 17% vol.
    • Acid content : min 5 g / l
    • Dry extract : min. 26.0 g / l
    • Residual sugar : at least 70 g / l

Passito and Passito Riserva can have a hint of wood.
