Gattinara is a dry red wine from the northern Italian region of Piedmont , which was granted DOCG status in 1967 . It is named after the municipality of Gattinara in the province of Vercelli .

location

The wine-growing areas in the Sesia area (Northern Piedmont)

The production area is part of a historically important wine-growing region, which is located at the last foothills of the Alps on both sides of the Sesia River in the provinces of Vercelli , Biella and Novara . There are nine DOP wine zones, represented by the “Consorzio Tutela Nebbioli - Alto Piemonte” consortium: Gattinara DOCG, Ghemme DOCG , Boca DOC , Bramaterra DOC , Colline Novaresi DOC , Coste della Sesia, Fara DOC , Lessona DOC and Sizzano DOC . The defining grape variety for the wines of these areas is the Nebbiolo .

The DOCG Gattinara is one of the smallest appellations in Italy and covers the entire municipality of the Gattinara commune. The wines can optionally also be classified as Coste della Sesia if they meet the relevant production conditions, as this appellation is regional and also includes the municipality of Gattinara.

properties

Most of the wine (90–100%) is made from the Nebbiolo grape variety (also called "Spanna" in the region) with the possible blending partners Vespolina (maximum 4%) and / or Uva Rara . The prescribed maturation period for the Gattinara DOCG is 35 months (of which 24 in wooden barrels), with the addition of "Riserva" 47 months (of these 36 in wooden barrels).
